I was just wondering what coping mechanisms people use to try & get around apathy...

I blamed my medication last time & although I'm sure it played a role... my apathy seems to be back again despite not being on meds.

I'm finding trying to do lots of small things helps. Reading is ok but I can't watch very much TV because my attention wanders or my voices distract me. Taken to watching films over 2 days. Also finding it a good idea to put music on if I'm just staring out the window, better than just sitting in silence or listening to voices.

Having trouble with house chores, cooking & most my other interests. Just don't have the drive to try even a lot of the time.

Not very well it only happened once and I was leaning toward supplementing with sarcosine because I thought it was a negative symptom. Meds tend to be my first line....could some sort of therapy help?

Therapy didn't seem to do much for my GAD recently. I find it rather hard to convey my thoughts & feelings. Or I just don't understand some questions. I didn't suffer with these cognitive problems last time, so wish I'd tried something then.

I'm on anti-depressants for anxiety which have also helped to get a little more joy out of activities but it's just starting or sticking with them that is the major problem now. I'm just glad it's not as bad as before.

as far as the apathy goes, I find that making very small goals for myself helps...in an hour from now, I will wash the dishes, for example. Things like taking a walk though, that's too much. The only thing that helps is if I have some place to be. People can motivate me, too. If my sister comes to visit and wants to take a walk with me I will go, or knowing that my husband will be coming home in an hour makes me hurry it up and get things done.

As far as the cognitive functioning goes, I just got out of a bad time, and that was not typical for me, either. My doctor doubled my dosage of Seroquel and my thinking is much clearer and focused.

I completely empathize with you and hope that one of these days they will develop a drug to treat apathy.
Thanks for this!
