I've been hearing stuff... I don't know if I should be concerned yet, though? I wonder if I might be on the border of developing some sort of psychotic disorder, but not a lot has happened yet.

Recently, while walking home from school, I heard unintelligible yet loud whispering (maybe sounded something like "god damn it" but it was difficult to make out), as if it were coming from someone really close / breathing down my neck. I remember I whipped my head around to see who it was, but no one was there.

A day or two later, I was on Skype with a friend when she went to go take her dog out, leaving me by myself. It was then that I heard a man's voice doing an odd chant over some really creepy music. It went on for about 20 seconds, then stopped. Then it would start again a minute later, then stop after 20 seconds. Then it would start again, and finally, stop for the last time. I was searching on my computer for anything that it could have been, but I never found anything playing. When my friend came back, I asked her, "what the hell are you listening to?" And she just said, "huh?" And I explained what I heard. She started getting really scared and told me not to mess with her because it was night time she was home alone. And then she kept asking me to describe what I heard in more detail. She was getting really freaked out so I tried to change the subject, but she kept pressing on and begged me to explain what I was hearing better. Eventually we moved on, but I never found out what it was?? Maybe it really was my computer... but I didn't find anything that would have done that. I wish I would have thought of muting the volume at the time, but I didn't. The reason I am worried about that incident is the fact that I heard that whisper that sounded just as real as any physical voice but came out of nowhere just a couple days before...

Before this happened, I was somewhat aware of the possibility that I might be in a prodromal phase since I have a lot of the negative symptoms of schizophrenia, but I tried to forget about that since prodromal symptoms are so vague and can apply to so many other things besides schizophrenia. Figured I was probably just being a hypochondriac - do you think maybe I still am?

Anyway, to reiterate, my question was... When should I start worrying?

I agree with bluebird.....go see a psychiatrist....it takes a while to get in with one and that way if it gets worse you can just call them rather than being treated in an ER or something that could be worse. It could amount to nothing or it could be sz depending on how you treat it.....some therpeautic interventions have been shown to be helpful like CBT for psychosis. Ask the doctor what options are available...

Also if you catch it early the dose of antipsychotic is often less so don't wait to long to feel better....

few times I had same thing, hearing strange noise or like someone would say something to my ear, it freak me out, but one of docs said only that schizophrenic people don't remember stuff like this so I don't know, maybe it's more like OCD or something :s

I see... I was hoping someone would say, "oh please, that is not psychosis." Because not only am I a bit reluctant to see a doctor about it, I think it would be troubling for my parents. Especially if they do say nothing is wrong - might be a waste of money and I'm trying to save money for a school trip. Boo. Does anyone disagree? Thanks to both of you for replying so far.

I wouldnt worry about a couple of isolated incidents. hearing mistakes are common enough without them being hallucinations. If you begin having them more persistently then it would be time to talk to a professional about it.

Well I remember----what kind of doc did you see? Was it a psychiatrist? A lot of doctors have only had a 2 week psych rotation in med school.

Here is my concern----if you go from isolated incident to full blown---in my case that happened over night---it was only because I work in a hospital I was able to get care. Now some people have a slow onset but the current models suggest that earlier care in those cases makes them much milder and sometimes resolve. It is possible nothing is wrong or it will resolve but if it becomes severe your choices are usually inpatient at the ER or waiting 2 months for a pdoc appointment. Neither is optimal thus I suggest establishing a relationship with a doctor in case you need them. As far as money it's way cheaper than inpatient and insurance should cover it.

I wouldn't worry about it until it becomes a problem. Psychiatrists can make things worse at times in my experience and blow things out of proportion. I say wait until it starts to bother you. Lots of people hear voices and just get on with it, it can be part of who we are. Just my two cents.

yup, psychiatrist, not private but from insurance, so I wouldn't be surprised if it wasn't the doctor just "doctor"..

i rented a room in a basement where i heard music, it was gothic industrial with unintelligable voice. i thought to myself where it was coming frrom and a dark voice answered to stop asking. i dont want to mislead, but just consider it was an attempt by intruders to harm you psychologicly. stay strong through whatever you experience, dont fear asking formedical help

I wouldn't be too alarmed over a couple of isolated incidents. If something that you are thinking may be a hallucination happens again and other people are around don't react to it. If you hear music or something again, just ignore it if your out in public
