If you're on Risperdal long term, does the hunger diminish some the longer you are on it? Thanks.

I was only on it a couple of days so I have no idea. Didn't particularly notice an increased appetite tbh, but I didn't care about anything so I might just not have noticed, idk.

The other weight gainers I've been on, like quetiapine/Seroquel & mirtazapine (AD - no idea what it's brand name is though) and maybe some others, I can't remember, never decreased over time, but increased with increasing dose. I never figured out how to not eat loads on any of them though. My (insert expletives here) ex-pdoc just told me to "eat less & do more" and I wanted to smack her!!

I've been told that by numerous docs. Ads don't make me too hungry it's just these damn antipsychotics....I was craving sugar so bad last night I made cookies. It's just ridiculous...

Just a week? How about six months so they can enjoy gaining 50+ pounds and seeing how they like it.
Thanks for this!

Even I'm not that mean....I actually read somewhere that pdocs had to have some level of sadism or they would be upset all the time.....

Well I am that mean, hahahaha! And heh what you've read about pdocs has definitely proven true in my experience.

Yeah she is really tall & slim so has probably never had a problem with her weight in her life. I was just stunned at the time. I mean, I took the same nutrition courses she did, and anyway I'm not a bleeding idiot! But when you are eating food that you don't even want, and your stomach HURTS from eating so much, but your brain is still SCREAMING at you that you are STARVING...yeah I'll just put the food down and go for a jog...idiot!!

ETA: I also never had problems with my weight until psych meds! Never been that hungry normally. It's NOT normal hunger!

Have you ever taken mirtazapine or imipramine? They really made me hungry! Most of them didn't though, like the SSRIs or SNRIs. I usually lost weight on the SNRIs because I felt so agitated & nauseated. Lost weight on Welbutrin/bupropion too.

Yeah a week isn't enough to gain a significant amount. I would want her on for a least a month and then when she was crying cos she didn't fit in her clothes and, no matter how much she tried, she couldn't stop eating, I would've told her 'eat less & do more' mwah hahahah!

Idk if it's sadism, but they (and lots of docs in general) get desensitised to distress and suffering. Like if everyone you see is suicidal, when someone tells you they want to die, you think 'and?!' Doctors here also joke that pdocs are '40 percenters' (people who only got the pass mark in their exams - though actually the pass mark is higher than that, but pre-clinical it was 40% pass mark), so they weren't good enough to do their chosen speciality so ended up in psych. I actually know a guy who wanted to be a surgeon, a girl who wanted to be a GUM dr (STIs), and a guy who wanted to be a GP, all of whom went into psych because it's better hours & less competitive, so this very much happens. Uni pdoc is very good and actually finds psych interesting, so there are exceptions. There's also jokes about pdocs being crazier than their patients, so psych & pdocs are not generally well respected by other doctors :/

No I've never been on the one you mentioned. Oh wellbutrin made me go right directly into a bad mania. I lost weight on it too but omg it was horrible. I was so agitated and angry on it. It sucked...

I can only take SSRI AD's. All the rest make me go into a bad mania.

I'm not normally a sadistic person (honest!), but this woman really brings out a violent side that I never knew I had... :/

Everyone has a dark side, and there's always going to be certain people that bring that out in you. Heh.

Yeah, she really is both incompetent and a horrible person. I don't know anyone who was treated by her who actually liked her! Yet she is like the boss, though not a consultant, because she's been there for years and they can't retain a permanent consultant, but have locum after locum who don't know the patients' histories as well as she does, so they defer to her judgement.

I had lost 30 lbs while on Risperdal, 4-6mg. Alas, though, when Zyprexa was added I gained it all back and then some. Zyprexa imho is much worse when it comes to the hunger aspect, Risperdal wasn't that bad for me in that respect (I've been on it about 5 years, and 1 year on Zyprexa as well)

I haven't been on it long, but I have noticed a LOT more "hunger" with it.

I was on Zyprexa for almost a year in the early 2000s and I gained about 60 pounds over the winter. Junk food, junk food, junk food. The cravings didn't stop. On Risperdal it wasn't as bad. On Abilify, less bad also. But I'm taking Garcinia Cambogia presently, not sure if that's a bad idea or good idea but it isn't speedy and it does dampen hunger.

That's interesting because isn't zyprexa the metabolite of risperidone i think.. And so the hunger comes long after the risperidone is taken I've noticed because most of it has been metabolized but better than zyprexa because some is flushed out.
