Facebook Introduces New Tools to Help Prevent Suicide

How does this make you feel?

I'm pissed because now I can't say anything. FB was my private venting place and now I have no where.

I don't have a facebook so that part doesnt really effect me but I can see you being upset that your venting ground is now against you. i would be upset if my venting grounds censored me.

It didn't say anything about calling the cops, it just said it would put you in contact with helplines if a friend reports you. Either that or I've missed something.

Really? Wow, I'd say that'd put some people off calling in the first place. All of the helplines here are completely confidential, they'll only call the police if you give them permission.

The message get flagged and someone tries to contact you to talk to you and if it's direct enough, they'll call emergency services.

At the top of the article it says

"Starting in the next few months, a post indicating suicidal or harmful thoughts can be flagged by a friend as such, at which point Facebook will be alerted—after advising the flagger to call emergency services if deemed necessary."

Yeah Facebook advises the person who flagged you to call emergency services if necessary. Facebook is not the one calling the cops and the 'flagger' doesn't have to either. In a way when you think about it someone on your friends list could call the cops if you say something bad anyway. Besides there is one way to avoid having the cops called and that's not saying anything about hurting someone or yourself... I can't see why someone would use Facebook to announce something like that anyway.

I avoid facebook nowadays but if there really is a function that will have the cops called because of some mere ranting/depressing post without harming someone else, it would seem rather restrictive for sure

the problem with this is is that you dont know whether the person who flagged you will call the cops. but they have the option to call emergency services. which is what? 911. so if they call 911 then 911 is gonna get the cops on you.

this is like that group on facebook i joined that called the cops on anyone threatening suicide. i got kicked out of that group because during one incident the admins called random people on the persons (who was threatening suicide) friends list. and then afterwards said "i hope this is a kick in the butt (insert actual "A" word) for her to stop threatening suicide." i spoke up against them saying that crap because it sounded like outright bullying not actual helping. and when i spoke against the admin i got kicked out of the group.

I was really frustrated with my voices one day and posted some things on facebook and that night I heard someone buzz my doorbell. I look outside and I see a police car outside. I would not normally post that personal of things to facebook, but it was like I ran out of options and just kind of stoped caring.

It's difficult to not vent such thoughts when you become obsessed with them... I closed my fb account when, in one of my more lucid moments, I saw all the horrifying stuff I had posted...
