I found a book on schizophrenia!

I've been looking for the book for a while at my library, but oddly enough, it was never in stock. I went to half priced books and found a good condition one for $6 and then I put it back and found the clearance section and I found the same exact book for $2! The only difference? This book has a few lines underlined. But that makes it even more anticipation to read the books to find and figure out why certain lines are underlined.

That's actually a great book although it's not the most optimistic...

Small world! I own that book on my kindle.

It's got quite a lot of interesting stuff in it although I've mostly forgotten the details & any downsides it may have. I'm sure you'll find it an interesting read though.

I got it because I knew so little about my psychosis the first time around so when it happened again I wanted to know as much as I could.

I always like to buy my books so I can highlight, underline, and put tabs into it so I can grasp on to them later on. However, your library could have gotten it through the inter-library-exchange. Your library will do a search for said book and the nearest library that has it will be sent to you so you can pick it up at the library.

I like this book. I've began to highlight parts and such so if anyone wants to read it, they can know which parts stand out to let people know which parts really stand out to me or i experience the most. I've been writing notes in it as well.

Depending on where you live in the US, search this site and there maybe some studies you can take part in NIMH » Schizophrenia
There is a UK equivalent (I live in England) if anyone else is interested.

I actually didn't find that book helpful at all. All I gathered from it is 'here are the symptoms and some theory- oh yeah you'll have to take these pills forever, have fun'.

I much prefer The Complete Family Guide to Schizophrenia: Helping Your Loved One Get the Most Out of Life by Kim T. Mueser.

I'm reading that book too, and it really is great. I'm not finished with it yet since I read slow after my last three psychotic episodes, but I'd recommend it.

Fuller recommends Schizophrenia for Dummies because it has a lot of coping mechanisms in it. I was disappointed to see that the Dummies book is written for the caretakers and not the patients. Spent just under $11 on a used copy from Amazon and now I'm not looking forward to reading it.

I'm about halfway through the book and so far I've found it to be really helpful and useful.

Lol, I've totally gone through books that I find useful with highlighters and pens too!

(That's one of my only complaints about reading books on a tablet, I can't write down notes and/or highlight things and that bothers me lol I'm a bit of a traditionalist. )
Thanks for this!

I've had apps that lets you highlight and do all of that! What kind of tablet do you have? If you don't mind me asking. Feel free to PM me.

I like reading books about schizophrenia and books written by people with schizophrenia because I want to learn about it. My 15 year old may be coming down with something and it could be schizophrenia. I want to support him any way I possibly can. I love him so much!

The Complete Family Guide... was the first book on Schizophrenia that I read. It was very good and informative. I borrowed it from the library and kept renewing (3 times)!

I'm very happy you want to do what you can to help your son. Some of us have parents that think we can just "get over it" or don't believe and all kinds of reasons to not be supportive. I think you're an amazing mom for trying to learn what you can. I wish the best for you and your son. hopefully, it's not schizophrenia and something less severe. I started having hallucinations at 13, so I know it's stressful for a teenager. But it's so great that he has a mom like you. Mine thinks I just see, hear and talk to ghosts. My dad just grunts and tells me if I stop thinking about it, it'll go away. My sister uses me as a side show freak for her friends.

It makes my heart smile to know that not all parents are like mine.

I just finished reading this book for the second time around. I think I'd missed a couple of chapters at the end the first time around I read it.

I quite enjoyed the chapter called "Schizophrenia in the Public Eye"... it had some good descriptions of films, excerpts from books & bios about famous schizophrenics.

Also particularly interesting was in the "Dimensions of the Disaster" chapter where they talked about whether schizophrenia was a modern illness or not.
