When you have too much free time because of unemployment due to mental health issues, you tend to focus inward a lot. Thinking over and over it's like a revolving door, you start thinking about not wanting to think. Hobbies can help distract you from the usual patterns of thought and rest the brain and most all rest yourself.
The same patterns of thought can cause stress, it's good to be able to think in different ways. TV, music and the internet can help by resting the brain from thinking hopefully |

Thanks for your great suggestions, Wally02! Also, if one is not employed or maybe only working part time, doing some type of volunteer work is a great way to keep one's mind off of one's problems. Any way one can squeeze a bit of humanitarian work into their week could be beneficial. Being of service to others is, I believe, a pretty-much proven way to reduce depression...

Volunteer work would be nice a couple of days a week, but it may make me want to work a paying job again
