Hi guys

I am just wondering about the relapse rates in patients with psychosis. I had drug induced psychosis when i was 20 and have relapse twice both from smoking the good ol herb. i am now stable and taking haldol decanoas.

Now stable i am wondering the relapse rates of people with psychosis and if you have ever relapse and how many times did u relapse (can be because of drugs or just by itself).
Any reponse would be much appreciated thank you

I have psychosis due to schizoaffective disorder and I've had 3 serious bouts of psychosis. All ranging in duration.

ive had i think three as well. after my first at 15-16 i actually had a pretty stable period where i managed to make up all the classes i failed because of mental illness and graduate, travel a bit, get into college, do regular young adult things. things went bad when i started seeing doctors about my "social anxiety." they put me on buspar first and it gave me insomnia. the lack of sleep made me hallucinate. i had to go to a partner's house to sleep because i thought my ex had died and his ghost was living inside my walls and would impregnate me if i slept. i accidentally ended up going off them cold turkey because i couldnt hold anything in my stomach anymore. and ever since my last major trauma 2 years ago (actually almost exactly 2 years ago, i think it was february 2nd) ive had pretty much nonstop delusions at warbling levels of danger. it started thinking i was a robot or cyborg and if i stripped my skin off terminator style there'd be nothing but wires and metal underneath. luckily i never tried. its the worst its even been now though. im really hoping once i get put on medication things will start looking up. id love another couple gap years to actually live a little

funnily smoking never made me worse? only had one bad reaction during that first break where i started hallucinating badly. thinking my friends were going to burn me alive, my boyfriend was going to kill me. never had a bad experience after.

I too have drug-induced psychosis (probably). My symptoms went on for 2 years, then went away. I had a "relapse" after smoking some cannabis and stuff about 8 months after that. I had small bouts of mild psychosis 1 or 2 times before the first major break though, so I guess that means 3-4 times. I also had some worsening of symptoms during that first break whilst using drugs, but nothing I'd call a relapse really as they only lasted a day or so.

Currently we are waiting to see if I relapse or not without drugs. If so, then I'll have some underlying condition but drugs will have only been the trigger. I don't think that's likely though.

The only real advice I can give is, your brain will be still be in a very delicate balance so using drugs again is not a good idea. If you are fully committed to recovery, then ideally you should never use drugs again.. (basically where I've got myself to, after making the mistake of thinking I could use them even moderately)

I have had around 7 major relapses with symptoms in between and dx schizophrenia. My psychiatrist said that I am prone to relapse under stress and will most likely need to be on meds long-term

I have psychosis which is currently untreated. Since im not on any meds, i have episodes pretty often. They can vary from a breif hallucination, lasting only a few minutes, to a full blown psychotic state that can last for an entire day or more. Those are the scary ones, because i have no memory of that time period. That said, if your on meds that work for you, and you take them right. You shouldnt have any episodes, and if you do they should be minimal. When i was in the hospital, i was on meds. (haldol, i think) and i never had anything until i was released and had to stop taking them due to money and insurance issues.

My pnp says the same. She told me it was a life time commitment

Smoking makes me more paranoid. When I was psychotic and smoking it just made all my beliefs seem more real. I'm not psychotic now so it just makes me a little paranoid. Same as it did before I was dx'd.

i think i relapse when i am under stress. i alternate between eating disorder, mood swings and psychosis. my first psychosis was caused partly by high dose of anti-depressant which led me into mania with psychosis. since then i hv around 4-5 times psychotic period which defers in duration n most likely only came under control upon hospitalisation. i am beginning to hear things, have weird n violent thoughts again lately. my CP thinks it's psychosis relapse, maybe because of school stress

Many episodes with varying severity, and two long term episodes that I was hospitalised for. My pdoc calls all the less severe ones relapses, as they are relevant to treatment adjustments.
