I have been diagnosis with schizophrenia 5 years ago. I m still taking my medication. 5 years ago, I was really breakdown and lost contact with reality since I dont know what is going on with me until 6 months later I started to talk with my mother about my studies. At that time I was a business student. I keep going in and out universities. I have no confident on exam. I keep questioning myself. Do the schizophrenic have a low IQ? After that my psychatrist diagnose me with depression. So, now I m taking 2 medication. I dont have a job and waiting for exam and interview as a nurse. Can a schizophrenic being a nurse? Recently I feel like my sister manipulating me.

Welcome, I'm not sure about the whole nursing thing, I don't see why not. Just because you have SZ doesn't mean you have a low IQ.

There have been genius level sz's, lol. You should take an iq test just to see, I find them fun. and yeah you can be a nurse but the schedule is going to be stressful. If you want to do something in the healthcare field you may want to consider something where you can be flexible in your schedule and reduce stress. I used to be a caregiver and I did it freelance so I could choose when I worked. Now I'm an admin for an assisted living facility. By law I don't even have to physically be at the facility except every two weeks. Sorry about your sister.

We have a degenerative disorder where gradually we lose our gray matter because of our illness, which would mean a loss of IQ. But I'm sure if someone with Schizophrenia did well within treatment and was able to stabilize than I'm sure a person with SZ would be able to maintain a healthy IQ where s/he could live independently or semi-independently.

People with severe mental disabilities are disqualified from being public servants or health care employees, like doctors or nurses or even nursing aids, because our realities are too frayed.

I hope you feel better soon.

Hi Natasha, I believe you can succeed as a nurse if you want to try. It would be stressful even if you didn't have sz, but maybe it would help as providing nursing care could give you a great deal of structuring to your days and nights. I had really nice success for well over 20 years because I took the risk of trying. I lived independently with my cat, and that was as good as my life could have been. I have lost everything so profoundly I almost failed a lot.

Schizophrenics have varying IQs. But, just because you are schizophrenic doesn't mean you have a low IQ.
