I have been on these Meds for so long. Haldol 6mg for a year and seroquel for like 4 years. I take benztropine because i Had akethisia with haldol and it helped. Al of a sudden 3 days ago I got it so bad with no changes in my meds. My pdoc increased the benztropine but I'm still having it and it's unbearable. I want to go off the haldol but I know I should see the pdoc first. I don't know what to do or what caused this to suddenly happen.

I'm sorry that you're experiencing akathisia

When I have had it, I found pacing helpful. I will literally pace for hours until I am finally able to be still, or I can't physically walk anymore. I've never tried benztropine, but I have been given benzos (diazepam) before for it. Technically they did help a bit, but I very quickly became tolerant to them and the dose had to be increased often, which is very problematic with benzos, so I'm not sure that I'd necessarily recommend that option unless you were absolutely desperate.

I think that you should get in touch with your pdoc and see how quickly the benztropine is supposed to help or, if it should've helped by now, if you can increase the dose or alter the doses of the haloperidol/quetiapine. Unfortunately taking 2 APs means a higher chance of side effects.

I hope that you find something to help as akathisia can be really awful

I had to stop taking Haldol because I could not stop moving my legs. It was a nightmare. I couldn't sleep cause my body would not stop moving. I suggest not taking the haldol any more.

I think you should stop taking Haldol and Seroquil. They are bad meds. They don't help you out either. Cogentin is a parkinson's disease med. It does not help with akathasia at all.

APs are not, in and of themselves, "bad meds". Trust me, I am not remotely a big fan of APs, but I think that it's irresponsible to categorically dismiss them as "bad. They do help a lot of people, and even save lives, but they have side effects, and don't help everyone and, for some people (me included) they cause more problems than they solve.

I would advocate for informed decision making about taking APs (and, indeed, all meds), rather than just telling people to stop taking their meds. None of us are Drs here and able to provide medical advice, and stopping meds should be done in partnership with a poster's pdoc.

Congentin/benztropine is used to treat Parkinson's, but also EPS caused by APs, as they both affect the same area of the brain. It can help with akathisia, as can propranolol and benzos, but obviously everyone reacts differently, so just because it doesn't help one person, doesn't mean that it isn't a valid treatment option.

Benzotropine with Klonopin are the only things that works for me. I hope you have found a solution, I know akethisia is torture of the highest level. If someone has never had, they can't fully understand.
