Hi,
I am looking for some advice/support around a specific topic: alcohol use when on psychiatric medicine. Do people generally do this and end up fine? I guess I am just overthinking it, because my psychiatrist and therapist say that if I only drink a little bit at a time, and only drink maximum around two times a week, I will be fine. But I worry endlessly about this. And I end up thinking I have an alcohol use disorder, which my psychiatrist and therapist vehemently deny.

If it's not clear, I take psychiatric medicine and also drink alcohol.

Does anyone have any advice on how to just let this issue go? I cannot seem to stop thinking about it and it's been on my mind a ton lately.

I have some obsessive tendencies, I think.

Thanks.

Hi Skibum,

I can share my own experience only. Which is, for about the last 20 years I've been on at least 20 mg / day Prozac, sometimes more, and for the same amount of time I've had a couple of glasses of wine in the evening every single night. Never had any problems with it.

Best....

There are some meds like benzos that have the potential to kill you when mixed with alcohol. Others like APs just magnify the effects so one drink can make you drunk.

Personally, I just avoid drinking altogether, but I know that's not for everyone.

Thanks people for replying!

I also wanted to know about another thing.

I often will act on impulses to remove all notifications from my iPhone. Do you guys think this is a strange behavior? I sometimes think I am acting weird by doing this. I guess I think by removing all of the notifications, I will become undistractable or something of the like. But I often cannot persist with this behavior for long because I need to know certain things, like WhatsApp notifications and texts, etc.

I was just wondering if you thought this behavior was strange or if you have any tips on how to change how I act around this.

Thanks.

Also, as for drinking, I am going to keep it to a moderate amount, since I know drinking too much is bad, but I think it's fine with my meds. (I don't take Xanax very often though it is prescribed for me for anxiety if I need it).

Me too Slumber Kitty. I feel blasted after one glass of wine...not a good feeling.

Wow, just realized this thread still exists.

I would love to say that I have avoided drinking for all that time.

I have not, however.

I still think that I have trouble avoiding alcohol. Though it seems like as of late it's getting slightly better. But not particularly. It's almost as if I do what I want, no matter what. It's kind of a bad habit to be in. Having no control over your impulses isn't too good.

I would love to avoid alcohol altogther. Maybe I just need a different therapist. I don't know...

It really depends what meds you're on. If your doctors are telling you that occasional, responsible drinking isn't dangerous for you, then I'd listen to them. Personally, I don't drink because it makes me angry, with or without my meds, but no judgment. Good luck.
