What age does psychosis or schizophrenia start? Can you start having symptoms when you're around 40 years old? I've mentioned this before on here about feeling really anxious and a low mood. I function normal, but feel unsettled at times. Then I have the sleep related hallucinations and vivid dreams. I've been to my PCP and then had a mental health assessment at a psychiatric center, etc. I have moments where I feel like I'm improving and then I feel bad again.

Here's a link to a webpage (not within Psych Central) that I believe may answer your question:

Late Onset Schizophrenia | Schiz Life

P.S. Here's a link to a second webpage as well:

I'm 38 and never had any mental health issues at all. Now I have anxiety and hearing voices/sounds while trying to sleep. I know about hypnogogic hallucinations, but it's really starting to bother me.

You could try a low dose antipsychotic and see if it helps.....I only had anxiety through my life then the bp struck.......

I either have schizoaffective disorder or bipolar 1 with lots of psychosis, they are really so close. First depressive epsidoe at 17, but first mania and psychosis at 41.Gotten much worse as I age. Much.

Most of the time it is in the late teens or 20's. I think I remember reading that it is a little earlier for male than females. My Dad, however, was in his late 50's when he started having breakdowns. He was drinking a lot and taking pills at the time which probably had something to do with it also.

16-30 are when symptoms usually develop.

My negative symptoms (Anhedonia, apathy, lack of motivation) started when I was 12 and positive symptoms (Including hearing voices, delusions, paranoia) started when I was 16.

The most common percentage of cases that otherwise happen aren't childhood schizophrenia (Because that's very rare) but instead, after age 30.

Diagnoses overlap each other so if your symptoms are interfering with your life to the point where you can't function, you should see a psychiatrist who will monitor you for a few months to a year or more to make the correct decisions of med treatment.

It's important to see a psychologist/therapist and make sure you're eating right, exercising, have a good quality of life with support, meaning, a good environment, etc..

Hi, Rider52

Most cases of Schizophrenia occurs between the ages of 16-27 in Males and a bit later in Females, the cut off point was about 36, though in recent decades it's disturbingly changed , as now you can be any age at all, like 9 or 49!, I began to notice this pattern over the last ten years or so.

Have you heard of Gang Stalking and as in your case Electronic Harassment as you may, be victimized by it as the symptoms get worst over the course of a few years as mine way back in 2004 started just like yours.

You want to consult a bug sweeper for an EMF broadcast analyse during the night or at times you are affected by this form of harassment.

Trust me, it's gets worse if you choose to ignore it.

I could be little late then at 38. I can't think of any triggers, medical tests were normal, no drugs or alchohol. There isn't a family history of mental illnesses, etc. I've just been struggling for awhile like I mentioned above. I was fine not long ago just stressed at times. It's anxiety throughout the day and voices at night falling asleep. I get really vivid dreams. I've tried so many different positive things to try and help myself feel better. I've asked for professional help and advice online. I just wish I could find an answer to all of this.

I think Schizoaffective means detachment from reality and suffering from psychosis, genuine Schizophrenia is a lot like being preyed upon by unseen Perpetrators, or accounts of be Gang Stalked including how the 'voices' respond to your reactions and goad you or they try to install 'triggers' so you can be controlled or traumatised by them, this in a sense would be classified as a mild form of SRA, as in ritualistic abuse aiming at psychological control over the indeed target or recipient.

You can see evidence of this within Freemasonry type cults, Mind control Psychological experiments, Child sexual abuse accounts and in Crack dealing networks with their scouts and hole's,and informers.

So the basic general dynamic's are always the same by design, that's how you can identify a symptom of a pathological disease as a poised to emotional abuses.

Just out of curiosity do you hear voices when falling asleep or just at night in general?

I ask because I experience this frequently as well. Even before the obsession began that I was “losing it” it would happen then as well. I think that it’s a pretty common experience even for those who aren’t at risk for psychosis. I’ve asked some friends around me and they have stated that they’ve experienced it before as well.
