I've been sick 45 years and have had tons of diagnoses and I haven't had much relief. And I've been hospitalized for depression over 25 times and tried tons of medication including ECT. I've never been delusional nor been psychotic (I believe). (My anxiety is almost psychotic.) I haven't felt like myself since I was 13. My problems haven't gone away which is why I think I'm schizophrenic. I'm not very productive and been on disability 20 years. How would I know if I have schizophrenia?

You can ask a doctor about it. Although if you've never been psychotic, why do you think you have schizophrenia?

I have taken lots of anti-psychotic medication in the 1990's in the hospital. I'm not really sure why. (And they did nothing to me.) Like I said my anxiety has almost been psychotic. I've never been paranoid. I've taken stelazine, thorazine, haldol and clozaril and they just gave me horrible side effects. Sometimes my thoughts give me lots of conflict in my head. Like my thoughts are battling it out and I can't sort them out. My problems started at 13 when I started dissassociating badly and I didn't feel anything around me. Therapy hasn't helped me, my therapist never told me how to manage my anxiety. In 1993 I spent 4 mths in the hospital in bed and no relief. I'm going to Johns Hopkins today to get a good evaluation. Yesterday I told my Dr. that I think I'm schizophrenic and he said nothing.

Did the antipsychotics work for you to reduce the anxiety?

Anti-psychotics did nothing to my anxiety. Stelazine gave me a horrific stiff neck. The Dr. threw his book down and yelled at me when I told him I was anxious! I have PTSD from being hospitalized. Breathing exercises don't do a thing to my anxiety.

So you’re already on disability and antipsychotics don’t work for you. That’s pretty much the limit of care for schizophrenia if you do have it, however if you just want to know what you have you could always get a second opinion from another psychiatrist.

A horrible day program Dr. in 1994 told me that I had breaks with reality w/o even consulting with me. And he told me he wouldn't stop the clozaril which I demanded he do. I don't think I've ever had breaks with reality. I lived in a halfway house from 1992-1996 which was horrific and traumatic.

The evaluation I had with Johns Hopkins was not that good. The Dr. didn't try and analyze me, he didn't want to know my current or past symptoms. He suggested maintenance ECT. I filled out a questionnaire and said my first symptoms when I got sick were "being detached from myself" and the Dr. didn't even ask me about that. I don't know what to do.
