I've been diagnosed with Asperger's and Psychotic Disorder NOS. My psychiatrist has said that she feels what has been diagnosed as autism were the early symptoms of schizotypal personality disorder, but she cannot diagnose me until I am eighteen.
I do agree that schizotypal seems like an accurate diagnosis, but I feel like there are certain symptoms of autism that I have that are not part of it. These include, overstimulation, stimming, processing problems, inability to speak under certain circumstances, and generally not understanding social situations. So, is it possible that I have both? Or, could these symptoms actually be part of schizotypal disorder? |

Yes, it is possible to have both. And there is a lot of overlap between those two. There is hesitance about diagnosing teenagers with personality disorders before 18 because a lot of personality disorder behaviors might actually be normal teenage behavior in some cases, but the only personality disorder that can't be diagnosed before 18 is antisocial. A lot of therapists don't realize that, and there is also a lot of tendency to under diagnose autistic spectrum disorders especially in girls.
