I know this sounds lame but I have a keyboarding test coming up in July. It's a 5 minute test. I am allowed 6 errors. I took 2 typing courses in high school which was many years ago. I can type fairly well without looking at the keyboard. I am not sure how fast I can type. I think for this test we have to be able to type at least 35 words per minute. Is this considered a "fast typing speed" or slow?

slow. I can type 60 words per minute with my fingers on the wrong keys. If you're nervous, it might be about medium speed.
Thanks for this!

Hello Zen. There are many Free Typing Timed Tests that you can take on the internet. My best advice is to try one of these until you are comfortabl. so that you are not going in cold for the test in July. I know for me that even being on a different keyboard makes a difference. Take care Zen and good luck on the test. Soidhonia

There is a website that I still go to. For practice or just for fun, all you have to do is sign up with an email address and confirm your email, and your in. It's free. It starts out from beginners to advance. And measures out your keying. The site is
http://www.typingweb.com/typingtutor

Wish you luck on the test
Thanks for this!

I want to take a vote on the subject of typing speed.

Can experienced keyboarders/typers tell me in all honest if 35 words per minute is high speed or low speed?

Thank-you!

Hi Zen888,

I would say 35 is a "low" speed.

My typing speed used to be in the low 60's after taking a typing class, and that was considered "high-end of medium" according to the instructor. Now I can type in the mid 40's - high 50's with few errors, and I would considered that medium speed.

Hard to say what is slow or fast speed as it depends on the employer or whoever is grading your test, and what their expectations are. There are many people in the computer industry who can type 100+ wpm, and secretaries/court typists 80+ wpm...now, that's fast!

Are you taking the keyboarding test for a job or school?

Morningcalm

I think accuracy is important...even if you're not that fast.
I would just type at a comfortable speed, and go for less errors.

Do you know how fast your classmates type? I would think your
grade would be determined by the class average...

The test is a requirement to get into the program at college. It's either pass or fail. 5 minute test, 6 errors maxium, and 35 words per minute.

Yes..I agree with MorningCalm. Do your best for least errors. That is more important. But hey, even if your not the fastest typist right now, who says you can not practice at it. Look at me, I type around 40-45 WPM. Still not that good, but I still practice. Not just to get good but for fun as well. But again, I wish you luck
Thanks for this!

I type 80 wpm. 35 is slow but about average for what is required at first clerical jobs. Back in 1973 when I took the Government Civil Service typing test (on a manual typewriter, not even electric were standard yet!) one was supposed to be able to type 40 wpm with 3 errors; I was so worried about the errors I went way slow even though I'd had a teacher-training typing class in college and could easily do 60 wpm+ by then.
