I don't know what to major in!
I'm supposed to start school next week but I'm waiting a semester or yr because I don't know what to do w my life. I wanted to do psychology but lets face it, I'm a mess myself other peoples problems would just make me worse. How did everyone else figure out what they wanted to do? |

I would say that most people don't know what they want to do when they first go to college. Also, many people change their major one (or many) times. Usually at least the first year (often two) is spent taking GE (general education) classes. Everyone has to take English, math, science, Humanities, philosophy, Social/behavioral sciences, etc. The reasons for this are two-fold...it makes for a well rounded education, and it helps you decide on a major.

Yeah, I was thinking about doing that, I think I'm going to choose that in the winter, or I may just wait until next year and possibly go through some recovery from now until then

Nowadays undergraduate degrees aren't that meaningful or limiting as they use to be since many fields now require graduate school. So, you could major in psychology and then see if you wanted to continue in that field or do something else.

Psychology isn't all clinical psychology - there is a whole lot more which might interest you. But yes, I would advise you to take a variety of classes while you can and don't rush into deciding things so early.
I went to university in Ireland (then postgraduate in the UK). I had to decide before I even applied for university what I wanted to study. I had some choice in my undergraduate degree within science - but couldn't do any non-science course, and could only do 4 subjects in first year. So I started thinking I would do biochemistry but then changed to plant science in 2nd year - when I had to decide on my main subject. But looking back, I think I would have preferred and benefitted from a wider range of subjects at university level before deciding. Good luck! |
