I've been in the hospital twice this school year. My school is doing nothing to help, and my parents are trying to help me with what they can. I know I'm failing nearly everything and I'm thinking of getting a tutor. Has anybody had an experience like this? Any advice you can give me will be appreciated. Thanks!!

Hi Life, I'm sorry to hear about your hospitalizations. It's terrible your school isn't making any attempt to accommodate you--have they given any reason why? Have your parents talked with the administration?

You're probably going to need that tutor, but that's not a bad thing. If you're willing, a tutor can get you back on track pretty quickly, as the lessons will be more intensive and focused solely on you.

Also, is your school public or private? If you fall too far behind, is repeating the grade an option? Is that an option you can live with too, if it comes to pass?

Best of luck to you!

Thanks, and I'm not really sure what my parents have done to help. All I know is that we're going to have a meeting with my teachers, the guidance counselor, my parents and me. I'm definitely getting a tutor. Also, I go to a public school, I'm thinking about home schooling for next year.

I was locked up in rehab for 2 months during high school. Luckily the rehab made me keep doing my school work--the best I could given my emotional state of being. I had supportive teachers who really let me get by enough to graduate. I hope your meeting with your school goes good and you can get something worked out.

I was really sick during one of grade years in public school, with hospitalizations, was out for months, and turned out to be half of the school year. I met with a tutor that the school assigned, who had worked with the school in addition to my folks to get what I should be doing. Because it was one-on-one, and not all the fluff that goes on in class and concentrated, by the time I went back, I actually ended up being ahead of the class.

You'll be able to catch up, not worry. The work is still the work but the pressure is less and there is individualized help. Hang in there in the meantime and not to worry. They should be understanding once your folks have that meeting and know you are not just trying to blow off school. Though when you are not up to par, is easy to do, it is important to make an attempt it and they are more responsive. However, in your own time, it is easier to do. Really, hang in there!
