I'm currently a freshman in college and I'm trying to decide whether or not to keep my majors of International Relations and Diplomacy and French. The other major I'm considering is Sexual Psychology. I've noticed that I have somewhat of a talent of mediating between different groups and people. I just don't know which branch will help me serve the most people to the best of my ability.
Any suggestions? Thanks in advance, J.R. |

Can you take a class or two in the psychology degree to see if it is something that you want continue in?

Check the job market. Make sure you can make enough money to live on and pay your school bills.

I'm glad you're thinking about this now, instead of at the last minute, JR. You still have some time before you formally declare, so it bodes well for you that you're pondering this in advance. I think it's a sound suggestion that you take a course or two in the discipline you're considering, or at least audit a class for awhile. Also, make some acquaintances among upperclassmen in that department and gain their perspectives. You may want to make an appointment to talk with an instructor or advisor in that department too, just to see what he/she says. Go to the appointment armed with questions, especially about your potential long-term course of study.
Only you can come to the right decision in this situation, after careful thought. Pursue the discipline about which you feel most passionate; if you play your cards right, you'll be able to make a decent living at either, regardless of the job market. Good luck! |

Good job on thinking on a major now, it's good to know and the earlier you decided the quicker you can start getting in classes that are required for the degree. If you can, can you take classes that explore both major areas? This is something I did when considering pursuing criminal justice as my major when I was a freshmen, I had declared it as well, then after the first semester went on I realized it wasn't the track for me and switched my major back to English. You can also pick one of those as a minor, as I am choosing to do with lingustics. Another good idea is to talk to department heads or professors who teach in that area and get their view on it, professors are usually happy to help and you can schedule an appointment with them during their office hours. I wish you luck on whatever you decide to pursue!
