I just got my transfer evaluation for the new school. 85 of 100 viable credit hours were placed as electives.
Besides shock, anger, and fear, there just HAS to be a mistake. I transferred from a big ten school and these were core classes that matched their checklists and criteria. There should have only been 23 hours of electives according to advisor I met with previously, with the rest applying to the degree requirements. I called to find out something, any kind of explanation, and they said I can make an appointment with the transfer office and advising office to go over it. In the meantime I asked if it was because of the age of the credits and it had nothing to do with it. I have to wait to talk to the departments. So I made the soonest appointments which are on Friday. I don't EVEN want to consider the ramifications of this but I have to admit I am having a very difficult time, since getting it yesterday, in getting it out of my mind. I can't do anything about it until Friday but even then, if it doesn't change, what am I going to do? This school has the only program in the state but I can't start over either; that's absolutely not an option at this point in my life. Never saw this coming. Ei-yi-yi. Just going to shake my head now, give in for the moment, and going to try to sleep on it. Perhaps it will look better tomorrow. Ha, in my dreams but tomorrow, rather today is a new day.

I'm so sorry. That really sucks. I hope it is a mistake. Make sure to take your syllabuses with you to your meeting on Friday from your previous classes so you can prove the type of work you were doing in them (this might help prove they should not be electives). Good luck.

Thanks all!
What a good idea Googley! I don't have all the syllabi from some the old classes but I have the catalog with the course descriptions in them. I can be armed with it as well as the syllabi for newer classes. THANK YOU!

Right--take all the proof you can that these courses meet their criteria!
Alas, some schools are very picky about such things. You didn't say where you had transferred to.....My son will have his core diploma (almost an Associate's degree) from college by the time he graduates from high school this year. If he goes to a state university, then all those courses will be honored as meeting their requirements, but if he goes to certain private universities, including one in this very same state, he will get NO CREDIT at all for them. I don't think he'll even get elective credit. Can you believe that?! (You know what I truly think? It's more about money than the quality or content of the courses.) I sure hope they will cut you more slack after they meet with you, Fresia. |

The system, where I have access, doesn't place the credits into a specific degree plan until I am accepted into the program which I have applied for. We went through it and there are 4 classes under question that I wasn't expecting and one that I definitely missed and will need to add. They will reevaluate the other 4 but agreed that they looked like matches under my old catalog description. They did not under the former school's current one. They will get back to me.
Having had my catalog with me for them to copy, especially since the classes are from 15 to 20 years ago before the catalogs were available online, it was easily accessible for them and a saving grace. (Because the classes were liberal arts, they are still good and grateful for that too.) Googley, I can't thank you enough! ![]() So otherwise I am right on track thank heavens, 5 classes will be a set back for graduation but one is no big deal. So overall I am in good shape and so much better than losing all of the others! I can breathe now. Just waiting to hear about one of those 15 slots, sometime by April. Keeping fingers crossed.

Glad to hear it worked out, Fresia. I recently went back to school and was able to get credit for Chemistry classes taken over 30 years ago by showing them the course descriptions. There were a number of courses I had to retake though, because they had a 10 year rule on those. It sounds like as soon as you get into your program, all the credits will come through. A happy ending.... What program are you going to do?

hi fresia, i know transfering can be hard i am a transfer student and my college has been bungling everything for me since i first applied. so i understand your frustration. Ok what i would do is try to email people as much as possible, then u will have a convenient record of what was said and promised or assured to u. keep them handly for when u need proof such as with the transfer advisor u dealt with. or get that person to make an official hand written note for you confirming what they said regarding your credits transferability, that way you have it in writing what ever was promised. i think thats the most important thing i can tell u.
