I'm fed up with feeling like this... Why should they pick me? There's probably like 50 people applying for the job I want. I will NEVER get a job. So sadly, I might have to be on benefits or something. Or I might have to be homeless because I don't have a job in my future life. Why was I ever born? I wish I was died or aborted at birth.

You are still quite young for the job market. My son applied to dozens of different places over a period of two years before he was finally hired. The way the job market is, there are so many candidates for each position, and employers tend to hire more experienced and older candidates first. So it is really difficult at your age to find a decent job. But that is NOT a reflection on you as a person at all. It's just the way the business world works. Like I said, my son worked really hard for two years, interviewing over and over again, and getting lots of rejections. But the right situation finally came along and it really was just meant to work that way for him.

So persevere. Keep applying and interviewing. Try not to take not getting hired as a rejection of you as a person (I know that's hard, but that is how you will be able to keep at this.)

Oh I didn't know about that. How can I be more experienced? I guess I wait until I'm 20 or something. I still got my courses to do yet.

The job market is dismal right now. In the 90s I had retailers calling me at home WITHOUT me ever putting in an application, asking if I'd like to work part-time because a friend of a friend said I used to do that. Today, those same jobs have triple interviews, tests, and, as you say, 50 people for every opening.

It took me nearly two years of sending out app after app and going to about six interviews to get my current minimum wage retail job. I was hired as a temporary Christmas worker and they kept me on. Mid-October was my one year anniversary there. I still make terrible low pay but it's something.

I know exactly how you feel. It's SO hard not to take it personally, but honestly, it is NOT personal. The economy is just horrible, that's all.

Maybe a short break from applying would be good for you. If you can, take a week or two off and just be good to yourself. Try to reach out to other unemployed people for emotional support and references. Do you have a hobby? The reason I ask is that if you are doing something you love a bit each day, it makes it easier. It isn't paid, but it helps you feel better.

Hang in there. You are not useless, just unemployed during very tough times.

You are getting more experience by volunteering and taking classes, which will definitely help in the interim while you search. You don't have to wait until you are 20. The rejections are not personal against you; it has to do with a specific skill set they are looking for, and that with the things you are doing over time you will gain if you don't already have them.

This can even be a good question for interviews, 'What skills make your employees successful?" / "What makes for a successful employee?" Then you can relate the skills you currently have that address being a successful employee or how quick a learner you are either in getting the skills currently through classes or for on the job training; that you are always willing and eager to learn. This is what helped me to get my first position that I really had minimal skills for, and then they were willing to train me because of an active interest and desire to learn. The other advantage to asking is that if you are not the right candidate for the position, you will learn what the skill set is needed to curtail your education and to get the skills you need if this is the type of position you want to go into in the future.

Though a rejection feels personal, it has nothing to do with you as a person; it is just being not the most qualified candidate at the moment and jobs are so limited right now with the economy. You'll get there doing what you are doing with volunteering and classes in the meantime. Hang in there!
