All my employment has been sporadic and it's been that way for 10 years. i'm 33 now.
i woke up yesterday morning with this thought in my head that i regret not doing any further education . . . and it's always been a regret, always in the back of my mind that i'll never get a good job unless i study something. to be honest it's been a massive regret, and i always think of my english exam and how i was uncharacteristically bad that day. anyone else have similar regrets/thoughts/experiences? what to do . . I do regret and I wish I stopped daydreaming in maths. I have a D in maths but I wish I woke up and asked my teacher for help.

If there is something you are interested in, it is never too late to go back to school. There are all ages going to school now, as I even have classmates into their 80's. It is important though that it be for something you are interested in, either classes to help your current career or if need a change, to look into this possibility. Local schools or online schools are a great place to start to, see what is being offered that might be beneficial for your career or just of interest to get started until you an figure exactly what you want to do.
Besides working towards my career goals, going back to school has helped keep my mind engaged and has renewed my love learning new things. This was an added bonus, as I choose to go back because I was stuck in my career path. It can never hurt to look into school or classes and see what might be of interest. Also, if not sure what you want to be doing, which was the position I was in when I considered going back but just knew I had to do SOMETHING, I took career inventories which match up your interests, strengths, weaknesses, and aptitudes with particular careers. Some can be found online, at schools, or employment offices depending on where you are located. I don't know if this helps are not, but know how hard it can be figuring out which way to turn sometimes; wishing you much luck as you move forward!! __________________ I can be changed by what happens to me. I'm in my 2nd year of college now and study seems to get harder and harder to do. I have almost zero motivation to work and at the same time I'm terrified of failing, it's such a strange thing. I just hope college for me doesn't turn into a "I should have done more" thing.

The students in my classes, and even the last school I attended, have been as young as 14 and there is an 80 year old in one of my classes now, so all ages. I am studying medical labortaory technology with a bachelor's degree (4 year degree) in biology at a university. I took the job interest surveys/inventories but knew I wanted something in the medical field due to the job market, and the inventories helped to narrow it down to what fields I was best suited. I had remembered how interesting the things were that went on in the lab when I worked in hospital previously as an trainer/educator, and there was minimal patient contact, which as emotional as I get, this was important to minimize. I began to research it, job shadowed, then started back part-time at a community college to get my "feet wet" so to speak, and also to make sure I really was interested before fully committing. I was recently accepted into the program at the university and transferred. Depite how hard it is, I am loving it.

I went to community college for a few semesters because I didn't apply to universities and took a break after high school. There, I took Economics and Accounting courses. I befriended one of my classmates (who was in both my classes) and I later found that he was 32 and just got out of prison for drug dealing. Now he's back in school trying to make something more of his life.
I think if he can do it, you can do it too. Just don't give up, and don't worry about what other people think. Don't let age prevent you from doing what you want. And if it makes you feel better, there was a 60+ year old man in my Psychology 101 class who just wanted to learn more in this free time. Good for him! |
