I am currently taking a class called Abnormal Psychology and so far it's been a wonderful class. Now, though, the class was assigned to read a book (we had to pick from a list of books) and write a one page response to it. I thought it would be easy seeing as how it was in my genre of interest.

At first I couldn't put it down. It was amazing and well-written. But then as the book went on, I kept getting depressed and memories were flooding over me. I also got extremely discouraged because the therapist in the book is a great therapist, and I couldn't imagine ever being that good. (I'm studying to become a psychologist.)

Now I'm stuck. I haven't even read half of the book and there's a one page response due tomorrow. I don't know if I should talk to the teacher about what's happening to me, or just try and continue, but it's so hard. I can't read for more than ten minutes without feeling like absolute crap.

I would definitely talk to your teacher about it if you can. They should understand. Some of those kinds of books can be very confronting and they have probably encountered it before. They should be able to give you some tips on how to proceed.

As for being a good therapist - give it time. A lot of the skill needs to be taught and practiced. I am sure you will be fine

Roz_G - I do but I'm always so nervous to actually go :/

catgoesmeow - Thank you. I sent him an email and I have class in an hour, so I hope he sees it before then. And yeah I hope so! It's my dream to be a psychologist, so I just pray that I'll be as good as the professionals.

My psychology teacher ended up being VERY understanding, thank God. I was able to get an extension, I'm extremely grateful.

Glad you got an extension! Dealing with triggers is important but it can take a lot to work through them if they're coming from a book you've got to read for classes. Hope you can get through it.
