I don't know why this is... I can understand most things my uni course expects me to understand, but the only way to prove I understand it is to explain in words what I understand. That's what I suck at.

True, the way to know you really understand something is to put it in your own words. Otherwise, you might just be memorizing words. Sometimes it is hard to come up with the alternative words, though.
