i listened to my first day's 2 hr lecture yesterday. this is the first class i have taken online, and at all in over 30 yrs

they stopped the video several times for opinion quizzes, which don't count. but i failed both of the factual retention quizzes . this doesn't make me happy, BUT i have done the reading, and i do have a brain impairment which affects my ability to retain auditory information (verbal lectures). AND i am going to try to go to every lecture on the day it's offered.

i expect this to lead me to much improvement in my focus and memory. and the material is actually interesting ~ that always helps

best wishes to any of you who are trying to complete courses for credit~!

I wish you the best. i also have trouble with auditory retention. It's in one ear and out the other. Good luck and hope you enjoy it.

one thing i have been forced to learn about myself is: my brain only produces a limited amount of the chemicals needed to focus and learn. after that it's Dee Dah Dee~ i really needed a class with a much lower level of commitment. however, this one is at least interesting, and it is good exercise~ thanks for all your encouragement~!

pluggin' along~

That sounds hard, a video lecture! My online classes don't have any video, just reading and writing and it can all be printed out, etc. Good luck, Gus, but sounds like you have a situation any of us would find hard.

I know when I was take the National Archives "course" to get a reader's card in London, they threw in quizzes every few points and I kept doing poorly on those and panicking, thinking I would not get the card but, fortunately, they made you keep trying to answer until you guessed the right one before they would move on. Would it help to write things down/take notes as they lecture or are you already doing that?

Good luck with your classes! I've never taken an online class but I've heard they can be more difficult than campus classes.

i talked to another student, who is very intelligent and still in college, and he said that first week was a nightmare,, convoluted and non-linear. he got a 12 on the test~! i felt a lot better after that~!

on the second week's test i got a 16, which is passing. the lectures and readings were much easier... it wasn't just me~ and yes, i do take notes, and listen to things over... but i'm not taking the class to stress over passing,,, it's an interesting class,, and still open til Friday (i believe). it's called Morality in Everyday Life, at coursera.com. the professor is out of Yale ()

i am still finding the work interesting~ and thanks for all your support~!

I don't know where you are, but most schools have a program for students with accessibility issues (like auditory retention problems). They will offer you alternative ways to get the information if you ask.
Thanks for this!

thanks Protocol. yes, several of the Videos did have transcripts available, but not all of them. one transcript was 11 pages long ~! i couldn't retain that much in a month of reading...

anyway, i got an 18 of 20 on the 3rd test. it was the easiest yet, partly because it covered some old material, and partly because i'm getting the hang of taking tests again. studying is a method of focus as much as any other practice. i really appreciate being able to post in this forum. i never thought i would take an online class and it's a big thrill for me...

thanks again~
Gus

i'm just wanting to report that i'm still in class,, doing well,,, i got 19 of 20 on last week's test and 17/20 yesterday~! there is only one more week to go, so i will pass (if it was a pass/fail class )...

i'm so happy with being able to read and even listen to lectures (with note taking), and pass tests which really challenge me, that i have signed up for 2 more classes, at the same time, mid-March. i'm very familiar with the subject matter, which is Buddhism: the history of meditation, and it's effects on the brain.

if anyone is interested it's at :http://coursera.org

thanks for your support~!
Gus

I hope that your online class is continuing to go well (well-ish?)...or at least providing you with more information about yourself and your learning process. (I still take classes and the most noticeable difference? How I didn't appreciate my ability to retain information when I was younger and how I miss its diminishing nature now. )
