I am a psychology major at Saint Leo University minoring in sociology. This semester I am taking interviewing and counseling skills. Has anyone else had this class? Is it just me or does counseling look much easier in the movies and on television?

I am a 67 year old Sophomore in social work (plan to get my Master's in Counseling); because I wrote about my life and won a scholarship. I am also a moderator of an abused survivors' group (for the past 10 years).

My major/first degree in 1972 was in sociology. I was going to be a social worker but the reality was harder than it looked like, I agree :-)

I have taught such a course. Oh, yes, much more difficult--knowing when to respond and when not to respond, body language of yourself and the client, etc. Please don't let it deter you, though.

I'm in a Masters program to be a licensed counselor and I've taken this type of class. There is so much more skill involved in being a therapist than it looks like. I was surprised at first at how difficult it was but now understand why it can be such a stressful career.
Thanks for this!

Everything is easier in the movies when you can write a script and determine how a character reacts to the counselors questions.

superfly47: yup!
I think it's important to remember that counselling, like anything else, is a skill. It can be acquired. But yeah, it takes a lot of practice. I've heard people talk about not being truly comfortable in helping professions until a couple or few years in. If it's something you really want to do, despite the newfound challenges, I say stick with it.

Hi!

I'm a soci and psych double major and I love it. You should really consider double majoring if you can handle it because the two curriculums go together sooo nicely.
and to graduate with two degrees in the same amount of time? amazing!
All the classes I have taken have been a blast and I'm sure the one you're signed up for will be too!
