Starting off at the university, I was really passionate about electrical engineering (it's what I'm studying right now) and while my gpa was good and I was passing all of my classes, recently (over the past year and a half) my gpa dropped from a 3.7 to a 2.5, last semester I took 4 classes and only managed to pass one. My parents are furious as they have been paying for my tuition... With that, I'm also losing interest in my major and have been feeling suicidal much more often. With that, I also turn to alcohol as well as marijuana to make me feel better temporarily. Has anyone else been in my shoes? Advice?

hi dlight
it may be that you are depressed. one symptom is losing interest in things that used to bring you pleasure, thus your lack of interest in your chosen field as well as the suicidal feelings and failure in school. most schools have free counseling. check into when you go back or talk to your parents about it if you can and see if they can set you up with a good therapist. welcome to psych central. you will find we have several forums where you can post about your concerns and receive feedback from other members. you will get a lot of support here. again, welcome ![]() |

I agree with kaliope. Counseling would be a good start. Something has changed ... either you are no longer passionate about your chosen major, your mood has slipped, you are having fears and doubts, or something else you have not mentioned here. You need some help getting to the bottom of where you are in your life and your parents anger won't help you get there. Get some help from a professional.
