Hi,
I normally post on the bipolar forum but this isn't appropriate for that section. I have always really struggled in maths basic maths like adding subtracting dividing and multiplying. I was in the bottom sets in maths class. I was in supported classes for maths too. My maths teacher when I was 17 said he thought I had dyscalculia but he didn't have enough evidence etc he did ask I didn't take maths the following year. I would of left maths out after I was 16 but maths is a must until the final year at school. I took (paid) for a Dyscalculia test recently and it came back negative however I was lower in certain areas and it was mainly for children but could be used for adults. I don't think I can get tested outwith being in education I'm 36 now and struggle with so much like left and right, time, length, volume, cooking and baking recipes baffle me etc etc Any thoughts guys or has anyone got Dyscalculia and can help me out? |

Dear Miss Laura,
I never heard the term "dyscalculia' before and so will have to do some research. Struggling with maths is something I have dealt with my entire life so I can definitely empathize with you. Sorry I don't know what to say that would be helpful! Sincerely yours, Yao Wen |

My husband claims to have dyscalculia. No one ever told him he had it. I think in his case math was just always his weakness, but I have my doubts it is beyond that. I do believe in the condition, though.
When my husband must do math, he struggles, but can usually manage the basic stuff. He certainly has his other strengths (languages). I can't help but wonder if his ADD plays some role in his math difficulties. His ADD is a definite and formally diagnosed health issue. The relationship seems feasible. He was only diagnosed with ADD in his early 50s, but the condition was surely present when he was a young student. His time management skills are quite lacking and he can't multi-task. He gets so easily distracted. |

I hadn’t heard of this and looked it up. I thought it sounded like a superhero. . I have some math struggles, maybe ADHD, maybe slight dyslexia. However, I am fine with business math and that works out just fine IRL.

I struggle with left and right a reason I don't drive, I have a lot of the symptoms if you like. But cause I am not in education I don't know how to get tested for sure. I have a hard time reading a proper clock not digital. I don't wear a watch cause of this.
I got lost I was meant to be heading back home to my city after an appt in another wee town I ended up in the capital a 2 hour drive from where I was I ended up in Edinburgh ooops spent over 5 hours just to get back to my house. My parents were really annoyed at me. I struggle with percentages and have no concept of this. I have no idea what price things will be Sent from my SM-G980F using Tapatalk |

I'm quite sure I have dyscalculia. I struggled mightily in math and never could master the concepts. It's gotten so bad, I can no longer understand how to do long division.
I wish I had an idea or two of how to help you. I know that most colleges and universities have special programs (classes and tutors) for people with learning disabilities. __________________ |

I'm not smart enough for university.
I haven't mastered long multiplication let alone long division lol I tried remedial maths but I sucked at that too. I wish I could get tested its a piece of mind means I don't or won't feel so stupid. Means I can say why I am the way I am if you like Sent from my SM-G980F using Tapatalk |

I also confuse left and right. I always wore a ring on my left hand and it helped me to know. It sounds like you do have a condition. The driving the wrong way for that long and getting confused could have been a one time thing. But, I hope you can get checked out to see what you do or don’t have. __________________ "And don't say it hasn't been a little slice of heaven, 'cause it hasn't!" . About Me--T |

I’m bad at maths, though don’t think I have dyscalculia. Dyspraxia, maybe (so my counsellor and I now strongly suspect). I have very little trouble with left and right but can still get lost very easily, even inside buildings! I know people with dyspraxia can be bad at maths because it affects working memory. Dyscalculia affects visuo-spatial working memory.

Rather than specifically dyscalculia, you may more generally have a learning disability in math. Getting tested would be done through a psychologist who specializes in testing, someone who can do a broader battery of tests to hone in more on what the issue is. It can be costly, but might give you some answers. Is this kind of thing covered under your national health coverage?
