I have some sad news to share with the community today. Dr. Clay, author of the first online self-help book -- Psychological Self-Help -- is in hospice care now. He was diagnosed with cancer earlier last year and treatments helped keep him alive for some time, but it looks like the end may be near.
Please keep Dr. Clay in your prayers and hearts. He's a good colleague of mine and our collaboration on getting his self-help book online in 1996 demonstrated his good heart and desire to help "give psychology away." ![]() DocJohn

Thank you, Doc John for letting us know...
He, his family, and other loved ones will be in my prayers. Hospice care can make his passing much easier, although it will not take away the grief. Part of his legacy is the help he gave so willingly to others...and the difference he made in the lives of others. With Respect, Catherine

Dr. Clay is one of the kindess souls I've had the pleasure of 'meeting' here or anywhere. I'm sorry for his illness. I trust that Hospice will take very good care of Dr. Clay and his family.
All my best wishes and loving concern, |

Sadly, I learned from his wife that he passed away this evening. I'm sorry. He's been a colleague and one of my friends since we first met each other virtually back in 1996. (If you don't know, I helped him publish his self-help book online, first on MHN and then eventually on his own website.)
He will be missed. ![]()

It is indeed a very sad week, and I'm very sorry for all of our loss here.
I'm planning on posting a memorial post about Dr. Clay's contributions to the online world tomorrow. If there's something you'd like for me to include about what he meant to you, or some way his work or words touched your world, I'll be more than happy to do so. Simply post here or PM me in private. ![]()

Dr. Clay will be sorely missed.
I generally don't use my account on this forum all that much any more, but his death is something I felt compelled to respond to. Although I didn't know him personally really, he had a very big influence on my life. His book on psychological self-help was the cause a couple of years back for me to re-evaluate almost everything I based my life on. The following process to get a good grip on the philosophy behind my life was long and hard and even at this point not completely finished, but has left me, I believe, a far better person than I was. I owe him much gratitude for that. He also helped me cope with one of the greatest trials in my life, someone else who I couldn't understand for the life of me and only ever got into fights with. Although I haven't been able to approve of this person, the road to understanding him that dr. Clay put me on, here on this forum, drained me of all the hate and negative emotions towards this person allowing me a happier and better life. If he did only a little of what he did for me for almost everyone he got into contact with (and I suspect he actually did more) than already I think he may rank among the greatest and best influences our human civilisation has known. He may not have had great renown, but to me that only serves to increase the respect I have for what he has done and achieved. It pains me that I didn't know him well enough personally to do more than lament his passing, and my heart goes out to those that mourn him. My condolances to you all. May you rest in Peace, Dr. Clay. |

I'm so sorry.
![]() ![]() I remember back when he first came here..... back before I left here. He was always so eager to help and explain things. I imagine he inspired many people as do those that are true helping souls. His glow will continue on in all that were lucky enough to know him and even those that just brushed by his words like passing a smiling face on the street. I believe you live on within your work Dr. Clay........ ![]() fins-mandy |
