Hi
R I also wish you the best on your trip sounds like hard times but hopefully it’s nice to see some family.

D I hope your technology issues are over. How’s the rain going we’ve had snow this week.

I need to get better at letting my anger out I just tuck it away and try not to stress myself out.

One more week and it’s Christmas I don’t celebrate it but it’s some welcome time off and an excuse to eat too much turkey.

Measly steps
I’ve fitted 2 built in wardrobes at my house.

Goal for me is to start a hobby of some kind I’ve been drinking and eating badly and have put on a few pounds.

My best wishes to you both

Hi steppers,

Sitting with the tv sound off, just poking around the 'net.

Mom's suffering in fits, napping in fits. Not sure if the meds are helping her or serve as a placebo for us, her family caregivers. Did take a walk today looking to find some late season pecans along the road side. This areas was a farm before "development" and a bunch of pecans trees are left. Found 5 trees! No luck with pecans though.

I'm making no plans yet to be anywhere else but here.

Thanks for your love and support.

I'll check back when I can, Revu2

Wishing you two the best. Holiday greetings, and help with the hard stuff. May you find unexpected kindness and lucky coincidences. R, you posted once that lucky people were observant people. I thought that was interesting. Me - I'm trying to catch up with normal stuff. (Stuff is a stupid word, but it feels like it fits here.) I only have a few holiday-related things to get done, so I'll look for the happy, and I'll try to do the mushy, corny things.

Happy holidays,
D.

My title is the name of Anne Lamott's book. Already 2 birds done today: getting some charges straightened out with my travel voucher while in San Francisco, and removing the stop payments from my checks I'd placed when I thought my luggage was stolen. Turns out United lost—and then found—it.

My momz died Friday Dec 16, and her sister, Aunt Chris, died 3 days later on Monday. They were they last of their generation.

BbB for today:
Adjust charges at Doubletree [done]
Stop the stop payment [done]

Get refund from United [next up]
Deal with leak in a condo unit

Carry on, Revu2

Hi crew, D. thanks for reminding me about luck and observation. Stand by tickets waiting is quite social as people share their tales of woe and available options to consider because the next confirmable flights were 4 days out.

I was thinking I'd take Amtrak, but my partner back @ homequarters reported they were full, too. Then someone said he's rent a car if he didn't get on. I offered to join him and share expenses and driving. That's what we did. $60 Urber/Lyft from San Francisco to Oakland car rental (they were sold out at SFO). Then around $380 for rental, gas, and food, $440 total.

After 2.5 hours queuing, we rented a mazda and he drove (I served to keep him awake) 12 hr to Olympia. Arriving at 5:30 am. My partner drove south from HQ in Seattle and picked me up and drove home. From 2 directions we arrived with 10 minutes of each other.

The weather had cleared enough that we only had a few sprinkles and alternative patches of fog/clear driving.

Lucky R.

Hi Crew,

A pair of days addressing stuff. Pretty successful, very tiring. Yet more to come.

Friday:
1 Goal: some of the ongoing condo work.

1 getaway: spending the rest of the day at our local Korean spa. These don't exist in the south. Quite a pity.

R.

Here's a curious set of circumstances where my interests intersect with those of the Vanderbilt family in 3 ways.

1. I play bridge. "In 1925, the game that we know today was derived from auction bridge and plafond. Contract bridge was invented by the American Harold Vanderbilt, who had some invaluable idle time on a steamship cruise."

2. I listen to Blues and Rock n Roll. John Hammond made field recordings of folk music and blues, he championed civil rights and a single society where races and classes mixed. His mother was one of three daughters of William Douglas Sloane and Emily Thorn Vanderbilt, and a granddaughter of William Henry Vanderbilt. Wikipedia

3. I'm dealing with grief. To understand this process, I'm listening to podcasts just started by Anderson Cooper as he deals with what his mother, Gloria Vanderbilt, left at her death.

4. With so many Vanderbilts, there's got to be some big bucks somewhere.

R.

Thanks Mes for your thoughts and well-wishes. Much of the time waiting was spent in story-sharing. Memories are social ...

Hi, spent a half hour last night watching replays of Lionel Massi anchoring the World Cup Win for Argentina. Started reflecting on how various sports use time. Basketball and Am. football use a clock which can be stopped for various reasons. Soccer/football plays 90 minutes in regulation then the referees add their estimate for how much time was used dealing with interruptions and delays.

With chess, each player gets 2 hours, so this is different. With baseball and tennis, time is less a factor & play takes as long as it takes.

So today, I've set a timer for 55 minutes. When it rings, I'll take a break and then continue for as many minutes I feel I was away from my tasks. Soccer/football style.

R

R, I'm sorry for your loss and the grief you're feeling. I wish you closure, healing and many comforting memories.

I am also an Ann Lamott fan. As I think of it, Ann Lamott would agree with our Measly steps.

Mes40, I think you have the happiest dog in the world.

And I sympathize with you dealing with all that rain. I've seen enough British TV to know that you get more than you'd like. We're getting rain as well, but in California after ten years of drought, I'm nothing but grateful. Some parts are dealing with flooding, and where I live we have a major storm on the way. Still, I'm loving the rain. Let's see if I change my mind by the end of the week.

Me - yesterday, I renewed my driver's license. Major trauma. Today, I'm having a slow day. catching up on things, and goofing off. I'm having fun designing the landscaping in front of the house. I hired some people stronger than me to terrace the ground and to clear out the overgrown bushes that I planted thirty years ago, and and weed block and mulch the ground, and now I get to do the fun part - it's like making a collage.

Good wishes.

Howdy Measlies,

One of the ways I reflect on quotes is to unpack them then convert to a maxim in my own words. Today's random pick if #165 from The Art of Worldly Wisdom by Balthasar Gracian.

Quote:
clxv Wage War Honourably.

You may be obliged to wage war, but not to use poisoned arrows. Every one must needs act as he is, not as others would make him to be. Gallantry in the battle of life wins all men's praise: one should fight so as to conquer, not alone by force but by the way it is used. A mean victory brings no glory, but rather disgrace. Honour always has the upper hand. An honourable man never uses forbidden weapons, such as using a friendship that's ended for the purposes of a hatred just begun: a confidence must never be used for a vengeance. The slightest taint of treason tarnishes the good name. In men of honour the smallest trace of meanness repels: the noble and the ignoble should be miles apart. Be able to boast that if gallantry, generosity, and fidelity were lost in the world men would be able to find them again in your own breast.
THIS is exactly what I've been mulling over: why do I have to constrict myself to the "the rules" and "fair play" and what law calls "clean hands"? And the counter-party can avoid, delay, lie, and brush aside? Well here's why, from the 1500's no less.

Key ideas:
  1. Gallantry in the battle of life wins all men's praise.
  2. An honourable man never uses forbidden weapons.
  3. Be able to boast that if gallantry, generosity, and fidelity were lost in the world men would be able to find them again in your own breast.
Now scribbling towards a maxim: The gods and surprising forces support all who engage for decency and our common good with clean hands.

18 words. I like my maxims shorter ... Clean hands for the common good can cut down great evil.

11 words. Hm. Clean hands dissolve evil!

4 words. That'll do. Refreshed.

R.

Hi WWW, today I'm ever so slowly getting geared up to simply go downtown and walk about. Bus pass in hand, I'll have a couple of places to check on, get a loaf of bread on my way back home, and later tonite watch an indie movie.

It promises rain. OK, I have an umbrella.

First lower stress day since Thanksgiving (late Nov.). Part of today's fun is working out a minor art project to make a postcard to send to a new possible indie film buddy because she hasn't texted or emailed me and I don't have her contacts. Except I know where she works. Ha Ha. Mostly, it's doodling around with google presentation.

The Gracian quote I'm mulling has to do with attending to one's natural gift for discovery. It's called curiosity and observation. Though Mitch Miller hinted at karaoke in the 50s with his bouncing ball to help people sing along (my family never did), it took a Japanese musician and record store owner to observe that people hummed along with songs on his soundtrack. What if we take popular songs' instrumental tracks without the recorded vocals and let people sing!

I'll report if I discover anything meandering today.
R

Oy vey. I called my day of wandering for Monday, it rained and I aborted my plans and came back home. Today, Tuesday, it's clear. The recent tale of my life.

Now there's a crisis with the garage door to attend to ...

Oy vey.

Hi, People,

R, it's a good question why we should be honorable when others aren't. And, yes, I ask myself the same thing sometimes.. For me there are two answers. 1- I am plagued with terrible guilt. I wouldn't be happy if I turned to the dark side. I can feel guilty for making mistakes/dumb decisions. Messing things up with the best of intentions. And as you wrote, there are other good people in this world. It's just that the yucks stand out. And of course no one (hardly any one) is completely yucky or completely wonderful.

I've had two weeks of drama - not the good kind. My mother-in-law passed away two weeks ago. It was during the rains. I drove up to the lake and the rain wasn't that bad. Tom and I did what you do after someone dies., then came back to my motel, where I got a note from my priest that she wanted me to send a gift card to a widow. Which I did. Later I talked with her and she said no - she'd never ask anything like that. So I shut down my credit card. Amazon immediately shut down my account. I did everything you do when you think your credit has been compromised. - It probably wasn't. Then Tom and I went through his mother's things. They were in boxes in what we call the "tack room" because it used to be a tack room. I turned my head and saw Luna chewing on something turquoise blue. (She's a dog.) I yelled, then cleaned up the mess. There was most of one bar of rat poison, and some crumbs. I looked around and didn't find any more, but I had to wonder if that was all, or had she eaten more. Tom figured she'd be okay, then started worrying because I was worrying. Emergency pet care is not available at the lake. The next day, Tom's nephews called and said that the one bar was the only one they'd put out. Whew! I drove home with no problem until I got to the bridge. The wind was shaking the car, and the rain was coming down so hard that I could barely see the stripes on the road. All's well that ends well. Tom's mother was 102 when she passed away. And she made the most of her time on earth. I'm honored to have known her.

Hi Ms D, sorry for our loss and the other issues. Yeah, living 102 years of a good life is admirable.

Seems something about being near a dying or dead person shifts the balance towards other crises. Some tear develops in our metaphysical barrier. We never want a crisis, but come on!

Best to be fast and safe with the likely compromise of your credit information.

Seems all worked out well, even the dog chomping on rat poison.
