Hello. Let me start with, I hope this is the correct section for this topic (and also happy Thanksgiving!).

I'm creating this thread because I feel like I spend, if not waste, a lot of my 'spare time' doing things that personally don't make me feel very satisfied or good about myself and my life. Now, what I mean by 'spare time', is usually the time I would spend just doing more or less nothing, like watching TV or just casually browsing on or playing games on my phone, because I have nothing else to do.

This 'spare time' unfortunately makes up the majority of my daily life, so I might as well just say my time, and my life, instead of just my spare time. About the only productive thing I do that makes me feel satisfied and good about myself/life is reading articles or walking, which I usually do when my girlfriend is at work, and weather permitting, so even that is kinda limited and I feel like just aimlessly walking all day every day isn't going to get me anywhere/anything.

I want to have things to do that make me feel like I'm not just wasting my time/life, and things that make me feel productive, or like I'm gaining something, or growing, or improving something you know; preferably myself and like an ultimate goal.

I know most people usually have, and would recommend something like a hobby, but I can't find any hobbies that are very enjoyable and that can be done at home. I've tried things like coloring, drawing, word searches, etc. but like I said they aren't really very enjoyable for me usually, plus I feel like I can't just spend all day coloring or drawing especially when it's not very enjoyable.

So I guess I'm just hoping somebody can give some ideas or suggestions on some things I can do that would make me feel productive, or like I'm working towards something, and like I'm spending my time wisely. I know it would help to have like an ultimate goal of something I would want in life too, but I also struggle with that a lot of the time as well. Thank you very much for reading.

Are you thinking about or wanting things that are personal or professional? What does feeling productive mean to you?

I'd probably say more personal than anything. I definitely would like to have something more than just a job ultimately where I work at just to be able to pay for things, so having a profession, or rather career is definitely a desire/goal.

But as far as what feeling productive means to me, I think it just means doing things to help achieve and work towards my ultimate goal(s) in life, what I want out of my existence, and doing things that help me get it/there. But the problem with that is I still don't even really know what I ultimately want, or what my purpose is, or even what I would simply want my purpose to be...

There are Interest Inventories you can take over the internet, some for free, more advanced ones you pay for.

I would also think about why you dont have a goal. My answer is, my parents, in various ways and for various reasons, crushed my motivation every time i tried anything. Its hard to work towards a goal when you KNOW it will be snatched away from you.

It makes choosing a goal nearly impossible, and taking a step toward it very scary.

I don't know I mean I think maybe I could just be overcomplicating or overthinking it for the most part. I just really don't like just sitting/laying and watching TV and being on my phone a good 75% of my current life; which is pretty much all my partner and I do.

Aside from my walks when she's at work and the occasional times we go out to the store to buy groceries and stuff or the laundromat to do laundry, my day to day life doesn't consist of much. So maybe I don't need anything special and abounding, just perhaps at least a little more than what I currently do.

As for the not having a goal, it may not be the only or main reason, but I think at least one reason why I don't know or have an ultimate goal is because I just know that a lot of things can and do change, including people, and people's interests, desires etc. For instance the vast majority of my life ever since I was a kid I wanted to be in the music industry, that was my dream, my passion, my daily dedication etc. But that has since changed, so I guess maybe I don't want to dedicate myself, my interest, time and effort and everything into something that I'm just going to lose interest in?

Take up exercise. Join a group or class. Build skills. Find something you want to do or learn and learn it.

I am struggling with the same issues as the original poster. I am disabled and since August 14th I've been stuck in a recliner because I fractured my knee. I'm awaiting another total knee replacement but I can't get cleared for surgery because I am having liver issues as well as some other issues. All I do is sit here and watch movies and cry. I have no hobbies, can't find any I enjoy. I have no purpose. I have no quality of life. I am just existing. I don't know how to break the cycle.
