I have discovered this term when reading about ADHD. I do not have ADHD, but I decidedly have this particular trouble and it is getting worse. And screen time, social networks, being connected 24/7 does not help me launch necessary tasks, especially tasks that are multi-step.

Just putting it out there. I am sure there are others for whom this is challenging.

Right now I am about to start a task that is overdue. I broke it down into subtasks, entered them in TODOIST as instructed by an executive function psychotherapist with whom I consult from time to time (I cannot see him regularly as he is out of network and charges high fees), and finally will start executing. But boy how long it took me. And the thing is, when I procrastinate, I am not necessarily idle. I complete many other useful tasks, but I do not even start on the hardest and highest priority task.

I am 53, I am employed as a knowledge work, and I am feeling shame in admitting that I am suffering from this problem, but it is better to show vulnerability and tell the truth.

@Tart Cherry Jam I hear you. When I am in pain or feeling low starting projects is difficult. I try to find a time when my mind is fairly clear and then take on the highest priority tasks.

I have different states of mind where I can focus on detail work or creative work. When I can be aware of what will best suit my mood I can often work in a very focused fashion. I try to schedule high priority long range tasks ahead of time so I can start on them and sleep on them until I am ready to do the project.

If all esles fails I lay down and sometimes my mind clears after a nap or just by laying down.

Hope you find ways to cope with this

I like the idea of finding out of what best suits my mood, including laying down to clear my mind @CANDC

I thought of it and decided that right now, as I have a relatively unrushed morning, my mind would like to finally develop a routine for such unrushed mornings which are like a blessing for me given my past difficulties with needing excessive hours of sleep.

After I floss/scrape/brush my teeth, I set a timer for 30 minutes before having my morning lattes. This is because at least 30 minutes are needed for fluoride from the toothpaste to have a positive effect on the tooth enamel. So what exactly will I do in these 30 minutes? That will be my task to determine and optimize and I will start today as I happen to be in the mood where I want to optimize.

I really like the idea of developing awareness of what suits my mood. To me that would also involve stopping berating myself for not launching tasks when they simply do not suit my mood of the moment.

Thank you for finding my post today!

@Tart Cherry Jam glad you enjoyed my post.

One other things that helps me because I like organized projects is to start a sheet or at least a notebook of projects to do and tentative dates I want to have them done by. With a sheet I can sort those by date and have a priority list.

I also fit into my schedule a time for exercise and mindfulness. These keep my energy up and I enjoy them once they are in my routine.

Of course everyone has their rushed days and that is the most difficult to schedule.

Good to heaer from you.

I do schedule time for exercise now and enjoy it. Time for mindfulness, not yet.
