Since the amount of stickied topics was getting a bit nuts, I'm going to condense them all here... so people can add new resources they've found, and all that sort of thing. Please try to keep the discussion here to a minimum since it makes it a bit crowded.
So, if you've got a resource to share that's helping you deal with self-injury, post away! It can be a link, or a document - anything you want that's a positive coping mechanism.
(originally posted by Kiya here: http://forums.psychcentral.com/showthread.php?t=83848)
"Alan Marlatt coined the term used to describe allowing ourselves to think of our urges as waves which we can watch, follow, and see diminish, like ocean waves. The technique works best for people who have had done some work with mindfulness and/or meditation ... This technique can work for the urge to use drugs, to drink, to emotionally eat, to self injure, etc. Unhealthy urges of all kinds can be watched, studied, and allowed to pass. They died off like that crashing wave on the beach. Yes, another will come. But know that you can watch that one pass as well." General US Numbers/Information
There is always 1-800-668-6868, which is the kids helpline. It's always, always available, and they can't track you. RAINN: The Rape, Abuse and Incest National Network (RAINN) 1-800-656-HOPE (656-4673) 252 Tenth Street, NE Washington, DC 20002 RAINN automatically routes your call to the rape crisis center nearest you, whose sensitivity to male survivors cannot be assured. RAINN's online information doesn't mention men as survivors. The idea is simply not to allow yourself to get lost in regrets about past or worries about the past or worries about the future. If you are firmly in the present moment, the past can be an object of inquiry, the object of your mindfulness by looking into the past, but you are still grounded in the present moment" Thich Nhat Hanh |
