When I see a knife or a pair of scissors or other sharp objects I get the urge to slit my wrists, and sometimes my throat. I always resist but I don't want the urges to be there in the first place. Please help.

Hi Bryony,
have you ever been sreened for OCD - because sometimes OCD can take this form, with intrusive, disturbing, repetitive thoughts. Remember these are JUST thoughts and don't reflect reality or that you will act on them. I'm assuming who don't have a problem with ideation - right? If you realize this is just a fleeting thought and not an actual desire - this will disarm the thought. When it happens just tell yourself, it's just your brain playing tricks and don't let it upset you. If we get upset by our thoughts, this will make them more intense. Take some deep breaths and have the attitude 'oh you're just a silly thought - go away?' and think of something else. Best of luck.

Hello, Bryony. Wanting to slit your throat is pretty serious, don't you think? One day you may not be able to resist the urge.

Some stuff you may already know:

http://www.vinland.org/scamp/institute/help.html

Do you want to stop? Would you agree to be hospitalized if it would help you to stop now?
Thanks for this!

Ideation means a person might be thinking of it, but not intending to follow through with the thought. I spoke with you in Pm's and I'm relieved to know, these are just thoughts that's are spontaneously popping up and you don't want to actually go through with the thoughts. Do speak with your doctor about this and best of luck - thanks for sharing

So, Bryony, are you going to get help, or simply tempt fate?

I understand where you're coming from. But honestly, there are worse things. I've been hospitalized over Christmas once. Sucked, but at least I was alive. And I've been hospitalized in college, too. I still managed to graduate on time. Actually, I was hospitalized for emergency surgery in college too, and it didn't affect my classes or grades.

Not everyone needs to know why you are in the hospital, or even that you're there, if that's what you're worried about. The thing with mental illness is that we don't get to determine when it strikes, and yeah, sometimes the timing sucks.

There will always be time for holiday and school.

I've had these urges for years and I've never acted on them yet. I think I'm safe for now. I just wanted to know if there was any way I could stop these feelings myself.

the only way you are going to be able to stop the urges is if you talk about it. that way you no what the urges are for.

Bryon I used to be a big cutter myself not anymore. I get what you mean by these fleeting thoughts though i still get them everyday almost but have not acted on them in months. I really hope that these are just thoughts and that you don't act on them you don't want scars that never go away. Hope you don't start it is just an endless cycle that you don't want to get stuck in. Don't get addicted to the pain! Wish you the best over the holidays.
Thanks for this!

Oh Bryony, be careful; be strong. Get help if you need it.

Be well, my friend.
