I was 12 years old the first time I ever cut. I continued regularly, undetected by family or friends, for almost 2 years. I managed to break the habit myself two weeks before my mother finally found out.

Since then, I have only relapsed once in 5 years, but that doesn't mean I haven't thought about it. I just thought I'd share a few ideas for those who are fighting the urge. I've had success with all of these techniques.

Note: I came up with these on my own. They're what work for me personally, I just hope they can help someone else too.

1. Take a walk. Getting out of the house and away from sharp objects seemed to help. To just get out and get a little fresh air. Even a 5 minute walk around the block was enough time to calm myself down and talk myself off the proverbial ledge.

2. Dance it out. I know it sounds ridiculous, and at first it felt that way. But putting on obnoxiously peppy music and forcing myself to move around to it helped me. After a few minutes, I even started to enjoy it!

3. Cuddle with something. Whether it's your teddy-bear, your dog, your SO, or your pillow. Holding onto something kept my hands busy, and listening to someone, or something, else's heartbeat calmed me down.

4. Phone a friend. I know this seems somewhat obvious, but talking to someone was what worked the best for me. Just knowing someone was out there who wanted me to stay safe and unharmed was enough to stop me from going too far.

Hope this helps someone out there.
Thanks for this!

Just wanted to thank you for this post, it's a good reminder of some ways to make it better/fight it and that you can recover from it. Congratz on your success and nice to meet you =)
