I know several people who get tattoos as a way to keep from SI. I am thinking about getting a tattoo on my arm, I have been very good about not harming myself lately, my last incident was June 3rd. Just wondering what people think am I just trading one form of SI for another?

Are you getting the tattoo because you want to feel the pain, or because you really want a tattoo?
Whether or not you are trading one for the other really depends on your reason for getting it.
Thanks for this!

You know I've been hearing about this in the last year or so as well... one person said they could look at tattoo and avoid SI...problem was she's had like 4 now...I no longer believe her...

I'd rather keep the sobriety and skip the tattoo if there is any question at all in my mind... Maybe at one year I'd get the tattoo to celebrate and re-new my vow to continue to remain SI free.. but only if I were very, very sure it would not trigger me and the image were a very positive one of healing and hope..

That's only one person's opinion..everyone's got one...

(I did just see Popeye and Indie's responses...these comments were just about friends doing it to avoid SI...I love tattoos in their own right and find many of them incredibly beautiful and it is an artform if done correctly...these comments weren't about that at all... )

Hugs!

Tattoos are not SI when done for the right reasons. They're an art form in their own right.

I have 4 tattoos. I havent si'd since then, but often have urges. I have all my tattoos on my left arm. I am almost covered up the scars on that arm. I want to get my scars on my right arm done and covered. I have positive sayings that help me when I feel the urge to si on my arm. I love my tattoos!

I think tattoos can serve a few purposes. I got one because I really wanted the tattoo. Once I felt the sensation (not pain for me) I knew I had to get another. It does effect endorphins, so it can have the same power as si. I do it both for the look of it and the feeling. It has made me slow down the si-ing.
