Are self harm and self injury different? Eating disorders and SI are both addictions. People do addictions to deal with their feelings.

I say it depends on the motivation. If you are doing it to harm yourself then yes. But if it is a part of an eating disorder then no. Although it isn't good and is indeed harmful.

If you are doing it with the intent to do harm or as part of an eating disorder, I would say it definitely qualifies as SI (though eating disorders may not really involve intent to harm). When I starve myself it's usually because my depression is so bad I can't get interested in eating and just don't care if my body gets nutrition or not. Maybe that's not intentional SI, but it's still harmful.
