I am just wondering how deep others cut? I have not cut in a couple years but the last time I did it was the worst ever. Deep, and nasty looking. I needed stitches but of course couldn't go to the hospital, so I butterflied stitched it myself. It didn't heal right and is a raised place on my arm, and if I bump it, it still hurts. I use to feel better with only scratches but that does not seem to be enough anymore, and although I haven't cut, I think of it often and I don't think of anything small scale.
Just wondering what others do and thibk about.
Thanks for reading

I would suggest going to the nearest hospital. It sounds like its infected and needs medical attention. I know it sucks, but your gonna have to get it looked at.
Good luck.

I agree that you probally need it looked at.

And any cut is "too deep" but you already knew that...

Are you seeing a therapist about this?

Thanks for answering you guys...but its an old cut(several years old). No, I don't see a therapist. Never have and really can't afford it now. Maybe there is somethng free out there, I don't know. It is still sensitive I think because I don't think it healed right. Thanks

It is probably sensitive because it never healed correctly since you stitched it up yourself, etc.

I cut my left forearm quite badly in Feb 2011, as in right into it by accident (as in I wasn't supposed to cut that deep, but my skin was soft from being wet in a hot bath), I needed roughly 20 stitches and whilst I did get them do at A&E (ER) I removed them myself a day or two too soon since I didn't want to book an appointment with my doctor to get them taken out, now I have a horrid noticeable scar there and it is sensitive to heat/cold.

The one time I did go deep it was a very short cut but I knicked a tendon or something and everytime I moved my thumb I could feel it for years. I was so terrified of needing stitches that I didn't go deep but got to where I was making hundreds of shallow cuts everyday. I'd do them close together so there was a lot of blood but I still had to worry about infection and as they healed the scars would looks like large bruises that didn't fade for several years.

As deep as I need it to feel that sweet masochistic embrace. Luckily I haven't need stitches yet...

As of now my cuts are more of deep scratches. I haven't needed stitches yet. But I seem to be cutting more and deeper...

I do scrapes and scratches, never deep, only enough to have a small amount of blood. I usually use a safety pin or dull scissors, but have thought of using a knife as of currently I have some healing scratches and one newly formed scrape well 2 but one was accident getting out of a pool.

I needed stitches once, after a bad relapse in February 2011. I went too deep by accident and tried to bandage it closed, but wound up going to the ER - 7 stitches. Now I have one noticeable scar along my right wrist amongst several smaller ones. I don't really mind it except when people ask about it.

One time I am pretty sure I needed stitches, because it would not close, it was about a half inch wide. I cut on purpose but did not intend to go that deep. I showed my parents and they refused to take me to the ER, because they didn't want me to be hospitalized. My dad wrapped my arm in duct tape and sent me back to bed. It never closed, so I have a very wide scar there now. Whenever I look at it, I think about how my parents didn't care enough about me...

I am pretty sure there are a few cuts that could have used stitches. It really depends on my emotional state at the moment if i cut deep or not. If i am really distraught, full out sobbing, break down(which does happen quite a bit!) i tend to cut deeper because that the time the emotional pain is so intense that i dont even feel how deep im cutting. Scratches dont work when im this upset, i have to go deeper to get the feeling i crave.

Now if i am upset, but not to the point of breaking down then my cuts are more scratches because i can feel it and the scratches are enough to give me that numbness i want.

Almost every cut on my arms needed stitches (whether I got them or not, is another matter) Cuts in other places usually didn't need stitches. I cut a tendon in my arm last time.

Never needed stitches, I haven't been cutting for a super long time. I go noticeably deeper the more upset I am, though, and the quicker I cut after the trigger. If I spend a lot of time beforehand thinking about what I'm going to do and trying to fight it off, they are likely to be less deep.

I've never needed stitches. Mostly I cut just deep enough to make it bleed a bit. My worst cut (well the worst I've done on purpose) was on my right wrist 'cause I wasn't used to cutting with my left hand and it went deeper than I meant.
