I tried so hard today, but I couldn't resist. Why is it so hard?

i think it's diffrent reasons for diffrent people.

for me it's because self harm is like a friend to me. i've no one to turn too, no one who cares, so self harm is my release- and without doing it, i feel so empty.

There are a couple of reasons why it is so difficult to stop injuring yourself. For one, its an addiction, and just like any other addiction, its hard to stop.

The other reason is that somewhere along the line, you felt relief when you injured yourself. When you started, and probably now, it was a coping mechanism to help you get through bad times. By the time you find out that the relief is only temporary, its too late. You are already addicted. Its hard to give up because its become a crutch and people tend to continue behavior they are familiar with then try to change. Even though you don't like the fact that you are injuring yourself, you know what will happen when you do. You don't know what will happen if you get help and try another coping mechanism. Fear of new things is normal, and for people who are depressed and vulnerable, new things are twice as intimidating than they would be for a healthy person.

The only one that can really make you stop is you. If you have to go to an inpatient setting, as scary as that is, its better than continuing to injure yourself. If you try something new, it can't hurt and it may give you enough of a boost to climb out of your hole.

For me it's because the positive effect greatly outweighs any consequence, even when the consequences are horrible. That moment of intense positive makes it all worth it. I'm trying to keep from doing it though. it will get better.
