Hi bazzinga, now why didn't you think of doing that instead!!!!!!!
That was sarcasm by the way!!!
You know if people haven't themselves felt the depth (or lack of?) feelings that can lead someone to SI and they haven't really looked that much into understanding it then it probably isn't going to "make sense" to them "why".
And some people would like to think that there's just an easy "fix" for it, it's not as bad as it is, or you've just not realized some "trick"/alternative that will start to make "everything alright again" just like that.
That's not to say that they're not "well intentioned" though or that they can't understand if you can express what it's like for you, or that they can't gradually begin to give you some real help and support that's right for you. OK not everyone can/will understand or offer real support but.........
So although it's got to be SO frustrating, upsetting, distancing, isolating (?)....................to get responses like that, as tempting as it might be to shut off from them, maybe try "pushing their boundaries" a bit and giving them that bit more insight.
And for those who really can't at least "get it" a little after that, well there's others out there and here who do!!
Best wishes
Alison

SI makes people nervous. The ones that don't do it. Its completely foreign to anything they have ever felt. It sounds psychotic to them. Mental disorders and emotional disorders, common as they are, still cause a great deal of fear in people who don't have them.

I will tell you this though, (and yes, i cut for years and years), its not a coping mechanism that will last. The addictive part will, but the relief won't. Sometimes you can get out of it yourself. Other people need some help. Give it some thought though. As I sadly found out, what you do today will come back to haunt you years down the road.
