I have scars on my arms, visible scars. The newest ones are more then a year old. Last summer, I was worried about what I would do about clothes, you know short sleves and all that. I decided that I did not care if people saw them. For the most part no one says anything about them, you can tell when someone notices them, but rarely do they ask. Today someone asked, then in a joking tone said "your a cutter arn't you...". It is not funny. People seem to think the idea of a cutter is funny, because of the people who do it for attention I suppose. That was never me, when I was doing it I went to great lengths to hide it. Once I even wore a ace bandage on my arm and lied to people at work telling them I had a biking accident, then I lied to everyone else in my life by telling them that it happened at work. I don't understand how someone could even comment on the scars...especially in the way that this person did.

Just venting, sorry...........

Sorry that happened, I have scars on my arms too which are very visible, and I don't wear short-sleeves anymore, unless nobody will see them eg when I'm out walking on my own. At least you've given it a try though. Perhaps you could next experiment to see if make-up hides the scars better, then you'll have more confidence when you go out.

laughing at a someone who SI's is equal with laughing at anyone who suffers for any reason. i hide my scars and lie when necessary.

i wish i didn't have to hide. i wouldn't mind if people saw my scars if i thought i wouldn't be seen as a nut case, especially at work and with the parents of my son's friends.

i only recently "came-out" to my T and it's so nice not to have to sit on my hands any more during sessions, i wish i could live more like that.

i cut and bruise to relieve pain and i have to be able to see my pain on my skin. it feels normal to me i wish other could accept that.

You're right... it isn't nice. I've been called emo by people whom I trusted enough to tell about the SI, needless to say if I ever have an emotional crisis - I won't be talking to them, ever.

Sorry this is your experience, sorry it's anyone's experience. I thought I did not care what they thought

thanks everyone!

I am trying, I am not as good as I seem, I just replaced cutting with binging and purging I thought I did not care what they thought

It just sucked today because I had not thought about it for a while and then someone has to go and be a jerk!

((((((((((((((((((((((((jenniferever))))))))))))))))))))))))) I am sorry that you were treated so badly. I know that I wear long sleeves all year round just because of that type of comment. I have so many scars that I can't imagine anyone not saying something. '

BTW, congrats that your newest ones are a year old! That is fantastic.
