In case it may be of possible help to anyone here who may live in northern NJ, one self-help support group that has been running well for several years, which was started by a woman who recovered from self-injury and is dedicated to helping others, is called BSSI or "Breaking the Silence of Self-Injury" support group. It's a no-fee, Christian-based mutual support group that provides mutual support for those who cut, burn or harm their body as a way of coping with overwhelming emotions, thoughts and circumstances. The BSSI group's purpose is to realize that a life can be lived without self-injurious behavior. In addition to group discussions, the group sometimes has guest speakers, and provides literature and a newsletter. The BSSI support group meets twice a month at the Living Praise Church, 37 Vreeland Rd., Room 205 (Launching Point room), in Florham Park, NJ (a few blocks west of Livingston Mall). Like here, at the group meetings, members support one another in their recovery from self-injury by sharing their strengths, insights, and coping skills. If you are in the NJ area, and would like more information on the meetings, just send an e-mail to: info@launchingpoint.org

The only other community support group that I know of, outside of NJ, is a 12-step group in New York City called "Self Mutilators Anonymous" www.selfmutilatorsanonymous.org

I work at a non-profit "self-help group clearinghouse" that serves New Jersey, where we help people to find no-fee community support groups for most any type of difficult life problem. If you live in NJ, and would like to find any other type of no-fee community support group, e.g., for adult survivors of child abuse, or for sexual abuse survivors, etc., you can phone us toll-free from anywhere in NJ at 1-800-367-6274, more easily remembered as 1-800-FOR-M.A.S.H.(Mutual Aid Self-Help).

Has anyone here perhaps found any face-to-face community support group in their area, that was helpful to them in supplementing professional counseling and the peer support here?

Take gentle care and hope, - Ed
