This won't work every time, but it has helped me. Normally the urge to hurt myself only last a couple of hrs. If you can go to your local lib. or the mall and hang out till it passes. I like the lib. cause I can find a book, get into it and before I know it I'm o.k. Most of us can tell a little before you are totally ready. At that time seek people. You will find that you won't have a desire to cut around people. Take care, Greg

That's a good idea Greg. Being around people is a good diversion. I hadn't thought of a library but that is a nice calm place to be around people without a lot of pressure. Thanks for sharing.

what a great idea!
when i was on holiday in switzerland, whenever i felt like SIing, i took my diary and went to sit by one of the lakes there (geneva), or whichever park i happened to wander to, and write it out of my system. somehow it was very inspiring and i felt i wasn't alone because there were people around me. now that its windy up here in finland, i can't go out, but i can still write. not around people, though, because i live in a rural area and i rarely see any people when i go out. if you aren't a writer type of person, try painting. it doesn't have to be like painting scenery or anything... try googling jackson pollock's work. basically the main focus on that kind of art is the process of painting (or splashing LOL) - not the final result. very therapeutic.
