I was watching an interview with astronaut, senator, US Marine veteran of many years John Glenn that was done recently. He commented that he was not old in mind and said that all seniors have ambitions, goals and dreams and that they should still pursue them. This really hit me. I'm 68. The thing about him sayings this is it can free you from acquired beliefs-like 'well I'm too old for that, it's too late in life to do much'.
But when you hear a person of status say something like that it can dislodge ingrained beliefs. It's like hypnosis or a placebo effect. His statement has given me a shot in the arm of hope and enthusiasm. I have always had big goals. Never could focus till recently. Now I'm thinking I want to and still can actually get good with my goals. I can at least give it a hell of a try. NBA star Michael Jordan in his advice on life said 'I'm fifty now. I'm not out to pasture. Look for me to do great things still.' Hope this will help any of you reading this. |

I found it interesting that he kept his chart up-to-date at NASA throughout his years by submitting copies of his annual physical, but many others of us now have physical and/or mental/emotional troubles or challenges prohibiting the continued pursuits of at least some of the ambitions, goals and dreams of days past. So for me, not being "old in mind" includes still being "wise in mind" while realizing my age does not demand the abandonment of ambitions, goals and dreams actually still fitting for me today.

I've been blessed with good health & even after surgeries like neck fusion, a knee reconstruction in my late 30's from a racquetball injury, I am still able to do everything I did in my younger days. Still riding horses, ballroom dancing & the funniest one was this little girl at church who takes dance & gymnastics asked the group of older women if they could sit cross legged on the floor. Lol, I got down on the floor, crossed my legs even more crossed than she could do, uncrossed & GRACEFULLY got up off the floor & stood up.....lol, she never pushed that question again. Sometimes actions are the best proof but I've been sitting on the floor like that all my life.
I got my degree at 25.....but in all honesty it's easier learning things & retaining them now than it was then....but then I had more stress in my life & my logical brain had to work harder than it does now to retain information. I am finding I like my older age life. I love where I am in life now & would never want to go back to those days even though I enjoyed my computer engineering career for 15 years. I'm still the techie of those around me who just never got into that. I was so used to being in a male field that most women weren't even interested in that it was difficult to relate to females.
