Time was when the wealthy swilled Scotch, the labouring masses lived in a beer sodden stupor and the middle classes sipped a tiny glass of genteel sherry. I blame supermarkets for making wine, a quite unnecessary foreign innovation, so widely available: Harmful drinking among middle-class over-50s is a 'hidden phenomenon' | Society | The Guardian

Hm...would be worse if it was vodka?

I wonder if a similar thing occurs in the US. I know wine is a big thing here as well. Craft beers, too.

I have my psych meds to thank for my teetotal habits. If alcohol + meds didn't knock me on my *****, I'm sure I'd be swilling down wine like the rest of the people my age.

Sherry...bleh. I wonder if anyone ever developed a sherry-drinking problem? Seems too disgusting to drink much of it.

All stores carry beverages... I guess it is there if you look for it or see it, and it is not there if you choose to ignore it. Yes, many seniors take to drinking because they have to self medicate because they dont get the medicines they need or they cost tooo much out of pocket so drinking is cheaper. Either way, a glass at night of wine is good for the heart and soul. Yes, seniors are nothing but adolescents that supposedly grew up. But often they don't change their habits.

I used to drink wines with dinner. And I have always LOVED the taste of liqueurs of all sorts. I also have a taste for brandy, whiskey, etc. I was never much of a beer drinker. But when I went on antidepressants, years ago, I gave it all up. I'm not on any medications anymore. However, I still no longer drink anything alcoholic. But, at this point, to a large extent, it's because I simply can't afford it. Water is SO much less expensive!
