Things baby boomers remember

I grew in the U.S., I was born in late '66, but I remember pretty much everything from the list included in the OP.


Except, I never rode in a woody, we didn't have 5 and dimes where I lived, I never talked to an operator, and we didn't have a gas shortage where I lived. Kennedy was shot before I was born.

I wore the brass bell anklets with my skirts and India sandals....still have the bells. Wore patchouli scents too......oh, wine skins were de rigor for the folk music festivals.

I love this car! I never knew anyone with a Mustang, though, or a Corvette, not a Firebird or anything like that ...

I thought both were beautiful vehicles.

My sister bought herself a brand new one baby blue one when she graduated from HS. She worked at Woolworth's the 5 and dime during high school. Back then cost of living was lower and you could work and afford to buy nice stuff.

This is so true, and our area has been hit so hard. We are inundated with tech workers that have driven up rents, real estate, and even food costs right up there with New York City.

I had to turn down a job offer from a Fortune 500 Company that I used to work for here because they said cost of living is not high here so they won’t pay a reasonable amount. They *know* that is not true. We have a huge homeless (many of them working) population here because people can’t afford to live here anymore.

Companies don’t pay what they used to and cost of living keeps climbing. In the meantime these companies *rake* in money from these tech workers, and that corporation I was talking about has automated and gotten rid of most of its workers. These corporations are leaches on our economy that keep transferring more wealth to shareholders, squeezing out workers, and refuse to pay a reasonable wage to remaining employees left. They will interview countless people for months on end to find some cheap employee willing to take the job for nothing!!

I can’t understand how the economy can keep functioning like this. At some point...doesn’t it kill off its own consumers? That is what I wonder.

Too true. Back when I went to the university I worked full time and paid for my college and living expenses. A young person can't do that now days.

My older sister bought this, brand new, 1965. Except her's had a black convertible top. I was a little girl and WOW did we have fun in that car! She always played the best r n' roll on the 8-track.

Wait...are you in the Bay Area? This is what's happening in/around San Francisco. I live 85 miles from SF and rents, food, everything is insane and getting worse. I read recently that the cost of living in SF is the highest in the country now. My son lives in SF, has a tech job, and pays $3,500/month rent for a lovely but very small flat. I don't even know how he manages it.

I should say the food is as expensive as NYC, which was in the news here, and the homeless population one of the largest in the country, but our city isn’t that big!

I think cost of housing is more like Los Angeles than San Francisco—it is really astronomical where you are!

our food costs were rated among the top 10 in the nation~! i live in the rocky mountains, and everything has to be trucked in ,,, UP hill~! this year alone i calculate that the price of basic necessities has gone up almost 20%, while my COLA (cost of living allowance) went up 2%.... i'm getting poorer and poorer.

personally, i suspect we are in a terrible downward trend that will put us into a world-wide economic depression in about 10 yrs, with wide-spread food shortages and famines. i don't want to live thru that~!

my grandparents raised a family in the Great Depression, but they had a big garden, and my grandfather was an excellent hunter and fisherman. they used wood for heat and cooking, which my g'dad cut, and generally did not suffer the way city folk and farmers did. i try to keep my 'carbon footprint' as small as my foot but still, there is no way for me to take care of myself if my support system fails... the rich get richer, and the poor get poorer, it's the Great Divide~!

I think all these ‘economic recovery’ stories in the news are a crock designed to sucker mom and pops. Whatever. People are not ok. A generation of kids are under massive loads of student loans, they didn’t get a decent job at graduation, and can’t afford to get married or buy a house. Consequently, a baby bust is starting. Diaper companies are feeling it. Also, not everyone came out of the housing market bust on their feet-!

Globally, I don’t understand what the central banks have done. There was talk of deflation for a while, but I don’t know what is going on now. I am still scared.

None of us are old enough to remember the Great Depression, but I wonder if we're due one at some point. I tend to garner things I think I might not be able to afford to buy later...

i've been watching a tv series, made in '60-'62, called Danger Man, with Patrick McGoowan.. i don't remember ever seeing it back when, but they didn't do so many reruns as they do now, with tv archives, n stuff...

it's got good plots, but poor writing and directing... i almost think Patrick was new to TV, he's so stiff... he plays a NATO secret agent, kind of. anyway, if you just want to be reminded of fashions, cars and all things 50'ish... check it out. (i don't have a link, i'm watching it on the web), 39 half hour episodes per season, with a 3 yr break, 4 seasons in all,, a lot of time spent in black & white~! LOL

Born in 53.....my parents owned 49 Studebaker. That was the only car we owned because my mom didn't drive. The first car I remember them buying was a 1960 valient. It pretty much fell apart in less than 4 years so they ended up buying a 1964 Comet. My dad's studebaker got totaled & he bought a 49 VW bug. That was the car I would do the shifting while he did the clutching when he drove me to school. When I got my license, that was the car I enjoyed driving....lots of funny stories with that car.

I think my parents had a black & white TV when I was born. Everyone else was getting color TV's. We didn't get one till 65 or 66.

Oh yes, the transistor dial in the station radio. That was what was always playing in the kitchen ehen I woke up.

My neighbors had one of those wood paneled station wagons. Fun to ride in.

Ah yes, the hand crank ice cream maker. I have no idea how old it was but it worked with our man power.

Ah yes, at 5 years old I took my first plane trip after my grandparents were transferred to Kansas from Ca. It was BEFORE jets (1958). Interesting flight when they had engine problems they had to shut the matching prop on the other side. It was the old Lockheed Constellation with the 3 tail fins. Those planes couldn't get altitude so had to fly right through the thunded storm.

Ah, my parents didn't have much money so I didn't see or experience much other than school & my mom didn't drive which limited me the 1st 16 years of my life.

We didn't get a color TV until I was in high school. Remember rabbit ears for TV reception (helped out by aluminum foil wrapped around them)? and then the rotary antenna on the roof which actually moved around to pick up different stations? And we didn't pay for TV, but just got a few channels and they went off at midnight? In the U.S. that was preceded by the playing of the national anthem.
