A place to check in and say hello.

I'm getting some low level anxiety about my health again. My friend was discouraging me about getting out of here. It's sensible from his position, that I stay here (a locked down nursing home). If I die here they'll take care of it, etc. He thinks he'll die first. I think I will die first. If I have to live here, or someplace worse, I'll want to die asap.

I think dying in my sleep would be okay for me, too. I get anxious about my health. Just got diagnosed with Diabetes and Cirrhosis of the Liver. May have a heart problem, too, but must get it checked soon.

The nursing home is confining all the residents to our rooms, because there is a case of the flu here. I miss using my vaporizer and going outside! They haven't even given me a nicotine patch.

I've made the decision not to pursue treatment for any of the potentially problematic issues I may have. I think the best thing for me is to simply let nature take it's course, as they say. I guess I could change my mind. But I don't have any plans to do so...

I struggle with the typical woes of older age, such as waiting to get a knee replacement at some point. I also deal with so much pain that I have to take both prescription and non-prescription pain meds---and sometimes I still have pain, which can be depressing.

But I plug along.

Hugs to you all!

Back in my day.........

Yesterday after shopping in our local supermarket, I was in the queue at the Check Out, and heard when the young cashier suggested to the much older lady that she should bring her own grocery bags, because plastic bags are not good for the environment.
The woman apologised to the young girl & then sighed, "We didn't have this 'green thing' back in my earlier days."
The young clerk responded, "That's our problem today. You folk didn't do enough to save our environment for future generations."
The older lady said "Ahh yes you're right -- our generation didn't have the "green thing" in its day." She sighed then continued:
Back then, we returned milk bottles, lemonade bottles & beer bottles to the shops. The shops then sent them back to the plant to be washed, sterilized & refilled, so those same bottles were used over & over, thus REALLY were recycled. But we didn't have the "green thing" back in our day.
Grocery stores put our groceries into brown paper bags that we reused for numerous things. Most memorable was the use of brown paper bags as book covers for our school books. This was to ensure that public property (the books provided for our use by the school) were not defaced by our scribblings. Then we were able to personalise our books on their brown paper bag/covers. But, too bad we didn't do the "green thing" back then.
I remember how we walked up stairs because we didn't have an escalator in every store or office building; walked to the grocery store & didn't climb into a 300-horsepower machine every time we had to go 200 yards.
. . . But she was right. We didn't have the "green thing" in our day.
Back then we washed the baby's nappies because we didn't have the throw away kind. We dried clothes on a line, not in an energy-gobbling machine burning up 220 volts. Wind & solar power really did dry our clothes back in our days. Kids got hand-me-down clothes from their brothers or sisters, not always brand-new clothing. . . . But that young lady is right; we didn't have the "green thing" back in our day.
Back then we had one radio, in the house -- not a TV in every room. And if anyone did own a TV, it had a small screen the size of a handkerchief (remember them?), not a screen the size of a football pitch. When cooking we blended & stirred by hand coz we didn't have electric machines to do everything for us. When we packaged a fragile item to send by post, we used layers of old newspapers to cushion it, not Styrofoam or plastic bubble wrap. Back then, we didn't fire up an engine and burn gasoline just to cut the lawn. We used a push mower that ran on human power. We exercised by working so we didn't need to go to a health club to run on treadmills that operate on electricity., , , , But she's right; we didn't have the "green thing" back then.
We drank from a tap or fountain when we were thirsty instead of using a cup or a plastic bottle every time we had a drink of water. We refilled writing pens with ink instead of buying a new pen, & we replaced the razor blade in a razor instead of throwing away the whole razor just because the blade got dull. But we didn't have the "green thing" back then. Back then, people took the bus & kids rode bikes to school or walked instead of turning their mothers into a 24-hour taxi service in the family's expensive car or van, which cost what a whole house did before the "green thing"..
Oh and we had one electrical outlet in a room, not an entire bank of sockets to power a dozen appliances. And we didn't need a computerized gadget to receive a signal beamed from satellites 23,000 miles out in space in order to find the nearest leisure park.
. . . . But it so sad this current generation laments how wasteful we old folks were just because we didn't have the "green thing" back then? . . . I think you should forward this on to another selfish old person who needs a lesson in conservation from some smart *** young person. .. ...
We don't like being old in the first place, so it doesn't take much to piss us off... Especially from a tattooed, multiple pierced smart *** who can't make change without the cash register telling them how much. Ż\_(ツ)_/Ż

Lol, possum, do you remember paper straws? They're banning plastic straws now but I haven't seen anyone suggest a return to paper straws. They worked even with milk shakes.

I do remember paper straws. They are now back in Australia. Even McDonalds is changing over to paper straws.

The warmer temps today are so much less painful on my knees. I wish we could fast forward and have 50° + weather everyday in March.

Definitely my joints do better in warmer weather. The last two days have been great here in NC--70's and low 80's.

That sounds wonderful! If only it wouldn't ever get hotter than that. They didn't give me any Motrin last night, they probably ran out again, so I have joint pain and a rebound headache.

About a week ago, the wind chill temperature here was -50 degrees F. The air temperature was around -25 to -30. Then it warmed up & we had a mixture of snow & rain which turned to ice. Then we had some more snow... just to keep things interesting. The high temperature yesterday was 0. Today's high temperature is supposed to be around 10... there's more snow in the forecast for tomorrow. Getting our doggie out for his daily walks has been an adventure...

Yikes! We only get about one week of below zero weather, usually in January. We call it Stock Show Weather because the National Western Stock Show is in January in Denver.

Now that my mother has been diagnosed with dementia, I'm even more worried about my cognitive impairment. All day long I struggle to remember what I need to do and in what order. And I'm very forgetful.

I have to stop worrying about it. For now I just pray my mother will be as well as possible for as long as possible.

I do things regularly that make me wonder if I'm losin' it. Neither of my parents developed dementia. But I've struggled with a lot of depression & anxiety throughout my life. And I've read that can be a precursor to senior dementia. So I don't know. I actually have a pretty set routine for how I do things. And I find that if I step outside of that routine for some reason I get easily confused...

I used to love driving but now it's so much harder, seems too fast. Too many cars too many signs, lights and rules. I prefer the back ways even if it takes longer cause it's slower than the highways and freeways. There's just too much info coming at me.

I don't drive anymore. I used to drive as a part of my job. And I enjoyed it. I still have a driver's license. But my wife drives wherever we go (which isn't far most of the time.) I suppose I could drive. But I just don't feel safe. I'm too easily confused. If we lived in a smaller town perhaps it would be easier. But we live in a major metropolitan area. So there's always traffic. And everybody is in a serious hurry!

Yes, I used to have routines too, good ones. But now I just sort of flop around aimlessly. It's this place, it is extremely uncomfortable for me here.
