It grows wild on my farm too though I haven't made it into tea, I usually buy it at the bulk food store near my farm. It sure is a beautiful plant

Which artificial sweetener is the safest choice?

I've tried to cut down on artificial sweeteners or water the drink down. I can't use much Stevia due to a metabolic disorder.

I haven’t tried some of the newer ones, to me they all tasted metallic and horrid. I don’t buy diet or low fat anything. Just watch my portions. If I had the money I’d eat organic no artificial anything. Unfortunately I do drink American soda, one can a day, but it’s loaded with artificial stuff and corn syrup.

Have you tried monk fruit sweetner? It is natural & 0 calorie.

I use turbinando & organic unprocessed sugar. I don't do anything artificial & very careful with foods that have any chemicals added. I mostly stick with organic or pure foods from my neighbor farms & dairy & bee keepers. Been so much healthier since making these life changes. Only soda I drink is crafted root beer & only about 1/3 of a bottle a day when I have it in the house

I remember sweeteners like Equal and Sweet and Low. Nasty crap!!! I don’t buy sugar free anymore because it not only tastes strange but they compensate by adding more fat. So I watch my portions.

I haven’t had soda literally in 8 years. No fast food for years too. Recently I treated myself to fried chicken and French Fries. But since I don’t like eat like that anymore it felt like a brick was in my stomach! So HEAVY!

Yeah, portion control, with real food. Good on you for not having soda! I’m still stuck on one a day. Sometimes I use it too have an orange cycle instead. Ice cream with orange soda. It’s not a lot of ice cream and I only use half a can of soda,…but…oh so good in hot humid weather

Yesterday I went out and had Arby’s. The roast beef sandwich was fine but the potatoe cakes,….ugh I could hardly eat them because they’re fiied. Never again. No fried foods for me.

I haven’t had Arby’s in years as they aren’t around here. You must mean fried when referring to potatoes? . Auto correct sometimes makes the wrong correction.

I think it depends on who makes them? My sister made onion rings in an air fryer. She got the onion rings from Trader Joe’s. They were delicious and caused no problem at all. But about a year ago my brother in law ordered a round of onion rings for the table I had two and so much grief I haven’t had any since.

I’ve been doing some declutterring and thinking of getting rid of all this stuff telling me what to eat after age 50 which I’m way past now. The senior center is always having seminars or pamphlets, etc. on diet. Food is all I have left to enjoy so I will eat what I want in moderation. I don’t want to count grams and servings. I haven’t gotten to the kitchen shelves yet but when I do I’ll throw it out.

Tell me about it. I'm not going to cut out all my sweets and sodas. I've lived to 69 already and am overweight, but not like those people on "My 600 pound Life."

Yeah, at this age I’m not going to deprive myself or eat fake food. Although I do love tofu.

I had heard somewhere that as you get older your taste buds tend toward sweets. Interesting cause mine are tending toward savory.

Im eating lettuce like its my job. But also sweets. But i stay away from fatty foods, like fried stuff, creamy stuff, pork (bacon, sausage). Beef makes my joints ache. So basically whatever doesnt "agree" with me. I keep cans of tuna, salmon, cod, and refried beans on hand for protein, one a day, lunch usually, with rice or quinoa or grits. Breakfast is coffee and Belvita. Dinner salad. Misc eggs, cheese (lately fat-free), melba toast, veg, peanut butter, fruit. I kinda eat like im camping out, but not a fancy camper.

Does that mean detoxing the heavy metals out of our bodies is a new weight loss method?

Sorry to reply so late to the comments about sweeteners, but I think that my migraines are caused by drinking stevia-sweetened coffee on an empty stomach.

I recall reading that some medical research journalist wrote that a person's insulin can go up even just by thinking about eating a donut. The body expects or anticipates a glut of sugar, so it tries to prevent it preemptively.

I think the migraine is triggered by a bout of low blood sugar due to my body thinking that the sweet-tasting coffee is loaded with sugar. So when the insulin enters the bloodstream, it drives blood sugar way down.

Anybody feel either younger OR older than your chronological age, excluding any health problems? That is, imagine no health issues such as dietary restrictions or aches, how do you feel otherwise? It could be “it depends”.

I feel younger than 71. I am still doing everything & more than what I did at 54 on my farm. I don't take any meds for anything, eat a very healthy diet i get from local farms. I have a 60lb Aussie shepherd "14 mo old puppy" that keeps me in shape besides all the chain sawing & brush clearing I do on my farm & mucking stalls & moving around 1200lb horses. I still can climb fences, sit cross legged on the floor & still get up "gracefully". I am actually healther at 71 than I was when I moved to my farm when I was 54. Surprising because all that is after a fractured back, fractured hip, neck fusion & an ACL knee reconstruction in my late 30's. The ortho for my compression fracture in my back said I would have arthritis everywhere I had an injury. I am still waiting for that to happen
