Generally, speaking, jokes and comics and cards poking fun at older people don't bother me, but some of them do play into stereotypes. What do you think?
I saw a tee shirt with abbreviation's meanings to be used by older people in e-mail and texts.. Here 's what it said: BFF =Best Friend Fell TTYL = Talk To You Louder BYOT = Bring Your Own Teeth LMDO = Laughing My Dentures Out IMHAO = Is My Hearing Aid On? ROFLACGU =Rolling On The Floor Laughing and Can't Get Up I don't like any of these. After all, we can have "best friends forever," and talk to people later. Not as many older people have dentures any more. I do have a hearing aid, but I can tell if it's working, and as I get older, laughing about falling and not being able to get up is not nearly so funny. What do you all think? Can you come up with some more appropriate texting abbreviations for older people, that are funny even? How about: TTTMPOP = Time To Take My Pharmacy of Pills, followed by TTYLL (Talk To You Lots Later) ? |

Usually it doesn’t bother me either but falls are no laughing matter. That shirt seems a bit mean spirited. I dislike the trend to scorn the boomer name, I’m a boomer and proud of it!

Me, too! Born in 1955--so I guess toward the end of the boomers?

Yeah I’m the tail end and my oldest sister the head. Some people spilt the boomers and call the second something else but I forget what it is. I’m a boomer. I grew up in the Midwest at a time when the Midwest was about a decade behind the coasts. So I’m a dyed in the wool hippie. :d.

I’m in my mid 50’s. I had a little chuckle when I read what you wrote. I have a feeling of it’s okay to laugh at ourselves. But it’s mean and discriminatory humor that is extremely politically incorrect in today’s society. So, no, I don’t like or approve of it.

I think it’s a case of it’s ok to laugh at yourselves, but it’s different when it’s coming from others (in this case, other age groups)? I admit I laughed but felt a bit guilty after and I wouldn’t actually send something like this to anyone I knew.

That's a good one, CANDC.
I'll have to hunr up some other jokes about older people and post them here--and other people, too. We could all use some good-natured jokes about ourselves. |

I laugh at myself all the time. I can get up when I fall but i have to crawl first on my fours. I can’t just jump up anymore. Lol I can’t hear and see well. I find it funny. I’d not like people to laugh if I had a disability, that’s not a laughing matter, but aging is a normal progression of things.

I don't like any "humor" that puts others down. We don't need any more of that in our world.

That's for sure. Sometime I think, "Just wait until you get old and it won't be so funny!"

@BethRags I agree. But I do like to laugh at myself. My family always laughed to dispel tensions.

@TravelingLady - my mom is always saying "Wait till you get as old as me." I tell her, I am waiting. No hurry. It gets tougher the older I get. But my exercises help and maintaining a humorous perspective can help me cope with challenges I face.

I try to keep a sense of humor about things, too, and it does help.

A sweet old lady telephoned the hospital.
She timidly asked, "Is it possible to speak to someone who can tell me how a patient is doing?" The operator said, "I can, what's the name and room number?" The old lady in her weak voice said, "Doreen Jacobs, Room 604." The operator replied, "Let me place you on hold while I check with her nurse." After a few minutes, the operator returned to the phone and said, "Oh, I have good news, her nurse just told me that Doreen is doing very well. Her blood pressure is fine; her blood work just came back as normal and her physician, Dr. Ross, has scheduled her to be discharged on Tuesday." The old lady said, "Thank you. That's wonderful! I was so worried! God bless you!" The operator replied, "You're more than welcome. Is Doreen your daughter?" The grandmother said, "No, I'm Doreen Jacobs in room 604. No one tells me anything.” __________________ Super Moderator Community Support Team "Things Take Time" |
