Social Security is a misnomer as no one is expected to be able to LIVE on SS alone. The whole thing needs to be revamped.
BUT that is going to be very hard because SS is a cash cow for the government. It used to be most of next generation relied on inheritances , ( still is in many cases ). Then there used to be a middle class that busted their butts for a company that paid well and gave their workers good benefits, ( like retirement funds , health care , stocks and whatever ). Now you have a basically part time work force so that the employers don't have to give them benefits . The "middle class" is disappearing. So you either got it or you don't. The educational system in this country is in the toilet. NO ONE should be starving in America ! ETC....ETC.....
As long as human beings are around your going to have many many problems, and SS is influenced by human nature.
(BTW: There's no way you can talk about SS and leave politics out of it.)

I agree. SS was just intended to help out the elderly, not be their sole source of income. Many companies now, though, are doing away with benefits even for full-time workers. My younger son (now 30) has been saving for his retirement years, anticipating no government benefits by the time he reaches the time when he has to stop working. He actually hopes to retire early!

I’m not married. I know if one goes on SSDI they are automatically enrolled in Medicare even if not that magical age of 65. If you inherit money you get dropped from Medicaid and food stamps unless disabled. And that’s hard to qualify for with all the proof the government demands of medical conditions.

MoodyBlue I agree that name is a misnomer. There’s certainly no security in it. What a joke. I think EVERYTHING in this country needs revamping. The entire system. The SS might have worked for previous generations but then again the cost of living wasn’t what it is now. There are more and more luxury buildings going up here while more tents appear at the same time. So many people on the streets because they can’t afford a place to live and have no family. The safety nets are inadequate whether for unemployment or rental assistance or what not.

Companies make people fend for themselves when it comes to retirement now.

This entire country has been in the toilet for many decades I think. And I feel somebody is trying to make this a country for rich people only. It’s like
a dystopian or science fiction novel or movie.

4 Social Security Changes Joe Biden Wants to Make: Is 2023 the Year They Become Reality? | The Motley Fool

It's impossible to avoid politics here. As far as I know, the GOP wants to do away with social security ASAP. So, I hope a better plan will develop, maybe a bit like Biden's anyway..

I’m scared to even read those links.Social Security Issues And I’m afraid it won’t be there for me and if they keep raising the minimum age it definitely won’t be.

And I will probably lose my MediCaid due to life insurance benefits. Any gain you get the government wants a piece as in taxes. Or they cut your benefits since you have these funds.Social Security Issues

When it comes to these things I have one observation: People can't win.

It seems Medicare is now paying less on drugs, too, even with the plan.

If the Republicans would get out of the way congress could fix the drug costs.

While I am delighted with the increase, it only served to push me further away from qualifying for the "extra help" they speak of ...

I'm one of those that makes just a wee bit too much (less than 20k a year after mandatory Medicare deductions), yet not enough to swing proper medical care on my own.

It sucks watching oneself fall through the cracks ...

I can relate. It's the American Way. I don't get the "extra help" and I'm sure many don't. They put so many draconian requirements to get "help". If you make over the income "limit" they reduce or stop your benefits, so you fall farther into poverty. And the limit is so insanely low, one would be in a tent by then.

I read CA will get rid of the asset cap for MediCal next year, as forcing people to have so little in assets to qualify means no money for emergencies, retirement, or other expenses. Everyone doesn't live in a house or have a pension. They are left for fend for themselves. Many pay rent and "low income senior housing" is not only not plentiful but the waiting lists are years long. And they have both minimum and maximum income requirements.

Age requirements, income requirements, sigh. Until last year I wasn't old enough to get help from this non-profit that "helps" older adults find resources they need.

IT IS and it took me over 60 years to REALLY see it! I've looked at things through different eyes since COVID, which magnified the inequality already there. As a kid I was spoon fed the idea of how great we are. Brainwashed, I was! Hard work and play by the rules and you get ahead. What BS. I hope they don't still teach that. It's a lie.

And we do a lot of victim blaming and gaslighting in this culture too. And positive thinking is supposed to fix everything, even physical illnesses.

Unfortunately I don't think we'll see an overhaul in our lifetime either, unless we live to be 100. And maybe not even then.

Here's the Average Social Security Check for All 66 Million Beneficiaries in 2023

I'm not quite as cynical as some of you are--but I definitely don't want the GOP to be making decisions about Social Security.
