Young People Are Sharing The Things Older People Hate About Their Generation, And Some Points Were Made

Neither of my sons (29 and 31) are married and they say when they do marry, they don't want children. I've finally shut up about it, but I'll miss having grandchildren.

There's a possibility they may change their minds. During all of my 20s, the thought of having children really frightened me. This was mostly due to cynical thoughts of the world and my own childhood/adolescence. Earlier this year I've sort of had a change of heart and now feel like when I find the right person, I'd like to have children and also thinking about adopting.

Oh, edit. I'm about to turn 31.

I know it must be difficult for a mom to give up on grandkids. I sometimes wonder why I did not have kids. It is a rough world to bring up kids in.

Nurturing and helping others does fill a gap that grandchildren would probably fill.

All the best to you in your quest, but you are doing the right thing by dropping the issue. Sometimes kids come unplanned and so you never know.

Interesting list.....#8 especially resonated with me. Not everyone is "cut out" to be a parent and if they know it's not for them, it's a wise decision. Doing something because our culture or an older generation expects you to can only led to disaster.

Personally I think my own parents were ill fit to be parents. They probably did it because it was what you did in those days. You conformed, or else you stuck out like a sore thumb. And standing out is something you didn't do. My parents used to nag me about grandchildren. I don't know why it was so important.

Having kids just to expect them to take care of you in old age is wrong too. It's a burden, what about THEIR lives? I agree with something said in the article about better child care here in the US. Not everyone has built-in babysitters and most employers don't allow PAID time off for child care, breastfeeding, sick children, or anything related to caring for children. But that's a whole other thread.

I’d say terrible state of child care might be one of the reason for not wanting kids: short maternity leave and extremely expensive day care options could kill a desire to have kids. It’s not affordable. Even in countries with longer maternity leave, day cares are too expensive and it’s not affordable to live on one income. Plus it’s not realistic to leave your job for a couple of years and then just roll back in. In some industries you are going to be 100 steps behind if you stay home longer than a year

But many people nowadays don’t want kids for variety of other reasons, not just the cost. My daughter has several married friends in their 30s and they have no desire to bother with having kids. It’s getting more and more common to make that choice.

40 Completely Normal Things Gen X'ers And Millennials Did When They Were Young That Would Seem Weird To Today's Kids

I still like watches. They will never get the satisfaction of slamming the phone receiver down to hang up on someone either.

How about dial up computer service?

These items don't go back far enough. How about having to use a key punch machine with computers and no one having a personal computer?

What else can you folks think of that weren't mentioned?

Yikes I still think of millennials and Gen X, whatever they are as “kids”! I can’t even keep up with each letter for a generation…..

I remember not only pay phones but call boxes along highways. I don’t think it wise to rely on cell phones as you may not have a signal, weak battery or out of your area. Some other crap like that which landlines don’t have. They always work except during the most severe storms.

TV was simpler to me in the old days. We had just a few channels but they were over the air. It was free….. Now you have to pay for stuff.

Handwritten letters and cards versus impersonal email. And the latter opens up the floodgates for scams. Snail mail is harder and slower, scammers can send thousands of emails in seconds but sending thousands of paper letters would be more cumbersome.

I still wear a watch. It’s over 20 years old. Easier to glance at it than dig out my phone and press a button to view the screen since it goes dark when not using.

I miss a lot of things from my generation and I’m sure each generation feels that sooner or later.

I used to use a slide rule in high school - there was no such thing as a hand held calculator or smart phone.

Seems like things in the new generation have changed a lot.

My daughter decided early on that having a child was definitely not for her. She's 37 and honestly, I don't think she would have found motherhood rewarding.

My son is 33 and my DIL 30. They work hard and travel a lot. No talk of a baby. I would love to be a grandma, and I do think they'd be wonderful parents. x fingers crossed x

Some things on that list ring so true for me, others really don't go back nearly far enough.

Family calling here from New York and how scratchy the telephone line was - and how expensive long-distance calls were! That comes to my mind. Those calls (made only on special occasions) were so exciting.

Yeah long distance calling was a big deal! And we only made those calls on special occasions like you say. And you used an operator to assist you; it would either be "person to person" or "station to station". Reception definitely wasn't always clear! But on that note, my landline is always clear and working. No need to charge a battery or worry about a signal.

And I remember when AT&T was a long distance call company only. Now they've gotten into everything or they are trying to.

AT&T is disgusting. I have nothing but problems with them.

Operators! @nonightowl I sure miss operators - and of course, the time lady. I love hearing the Pink Floyd song with the operator talking.

AT&T = American Thieves and Thugs, LOL. I heard that on an episode of All in the Family, spoken by Archie! He said that when he got their bill.

I hear nothing but bad stuff on all the communications companies.

I used to call the Time Lady when I was little because I thought she was a real person! When she said good morning, I said good morning. I asked her does she get tired and I just heard "At the tone...." I actually thought she was on the phone 24 hours and was lonely!

After the time change (both times), that line would be jammed. Or else I got a busy signal. So many people trying to find out what time it is.

I love Pink Floyd! What song are you referring to with the operator? I like this song by ELO "Telephone Line" also. And I think Jim Croce had a song called "Operator". I probably heard the PF song but didn't know the name of it.

I never need to call directory assistance but am sure it's all automated unless you request a human. And they probably don't have many answering the phones now so you'd be on hold a long time. We are losing the human touch in so many things.

That's what I miss the most: Human contact. Even before COVID, things were more and more automated. "Go visit our site, like us on Yelp, send us an email, book your appointment online, see your doctor on a televisit, download our banking app, (I'd rather see a teller in person) etc.

It's hard to talk to a person any more, it seems. I've found (not intentionally) that if I hit the wrong buttons they'll connect me to a person pronto.

I sure remember the days of operator and party lines and phone booths, etc. I still keep my land line, too, with no problems. I use that more than my smart phone.

About the kids thing, a baby boomer told me it was selfish not to have kids. But my whole life, I had to listen to my mom telling me that none of us were wanted by her. She got married and had kids because she was expected to. I grew up wishing she had given me up for adoption to a mother who wanted kids.

I decided not to have biological children before puberty when I learned about all the mental illness in my family. I've never had a desire to pass on those genes. I had planned to adopt as a single mother, but now think I do not have the mental stability for that. I volunteer with children.

My middle brother is so disabled that he cannot even take care of himself, and the youngest seems to not want children (he is 34). It's not too late for him, I suppose. But I think it's likely that my parents will not have grandchildren.

I see all sorts of crappy and abusive parents as well as people who cannot even take care of themselves trying to conceive. I know there's no point in trying to talk people out of having children if they are dead set on it, but I really think people who can't take even take care of themselves or who don't want children shouldn't have them.

I've also found if I press the wrong key I get routed to a human. Sometimes the menu doesn't have what I'm calling about so I say nothing. Most of the time it will connect me to a human but sometimes it says "That is not a valid option" and hangs up on me.

I hate it when they don't give keypad options but voice recognition only. By that I mean you have to say what you're calling about, rather than pressing 1 to pay my bill just as an example. Sometimes it doesn't understand me. And the overly perky digital voices irritate me.

People have asked me "Why do you still have a landline?" Like you I use it more than my smartphone, because it always has a clear connection and doesn't drop calls. I use my cell only for calls out of my area or when out and about, and HAVE to make a call that can't wait till I get home. If I can wait, I wait.

I tried to call an toll-free number from home and it said "This call can't be completed as dialed". But it worked on my cell.

That's awful, Downandlonely. WTF? TELLING your kids that???

And climate change or not, I wouldn't want to bring kids into this world. It's getting more and more troubled, just think what kind of planet they will be living on.

I don't get the comment about it being "selfish" not to have kids. Just who does that person think you have an obligation to anyway???

It "only" took me 6 decades to come to this theory, but I believe my parents became parents because that's what you did in those days. It was more of a culture of conformity then. Now having kids isn't pushed as much but we're still a family-oriented culture. I've never had a maternal instinct or wish to be a parent. It seems like so much trouble.

In hindsight, I think my own parents weren't mature enough or had the right temperament to be parents. It seems they passed on their own family's dysfunctional dynamics and I don't want to pass that on.

You're right that if they can't take care of themselves or truly want kids (and really know what that entails), they shouldn't have them. They need to be financially, mentally, and emotionally stable enough to do it. I've done a lot of research on family dynamics and generational differences. It seems my parents were still children in adults' bodies, that they never really matured themselves. Or had a lot missing in their own childhoods, so poor role models.

I'm not saying they intentionally created a dysfunctional family but they did it nonetheless. I doubt if they were even aware of it, being that they always thought they were right about everything and other parents are inferior to them.

Aw, that is so sweet about you calling the Time Lady.

Yes! Those jammed lines when the time changed!!

"Telephone Line" is such a beautiful song.

Pink Floyd - they have a number of songs with that fascinating background talking. Much of it is in The Wall - the operator talking is from The Wall, the song Young Lust. They have the TV sounds in several songs, one of them is Wish You Were Here.

The operator at the end of Young Lust is the quintessential old-school operator. You can listen to it on YouTube.

[Phone rings..Clink of receiver being lifted]
"Hello..?"
"Yes, a collect call for Mrs. Floyd from Mr. Floyd.
Will you accept the charges from United States?"
[clunk! of phone being put down]
"Oh, he hung up! That's your residence, right? I wonder why he hung up?
Is there supposed to be someone else there besides your wife, sir, to answer?"
[Phone rings again...clunk of receiver being picked up]
"Hello?"
"This is United States calling, are we reaching...
[interrupted by phone being put down]
"See he keeps hanging up, and it's a man answering."

I can't open it on here but should be able to on my phone. It says "restricted video" here, probably due to the title and this is the library's laptop I have. It's due tomorrow.....

There's another song from the 80's with someone making a call. I never knew the name or artist! They are speaking in Spanish in some places. In one part, they say, after you hear a ringing phone, "Hello? Is Mr. _____ there?" "No, senor. No _______ is here." I've always liked the song. It sounds like he's saying is Mr. Donkey there, LOL.

It was a good song to dance to.

Adults Are Sharing The Now-Discontinued Foods From Childhood They Would Give Anything To Eat Again, And I Haven't Thought About Ritz Bits S'mores In Sooo Long

Is Tang still around? I liked that. And those Mickey D's apple pies were great. And Pepsi had a cola named Pepsi Light, with a lemon flavor. I loved that. What do you miss?

I don’t know if Tang is still around. I used to like Ovaltine and Eskimo Pies but the latter has been renamed Edy’s due to Eskimo being considered racist now. The brand is over a century old but I don’t see it at my store now.Old versus young
