Can someone become asexual if they previously weren't?

One of the possible answers to "why doesn't he want sex" could be that my husband is asexual.

But the first 1-2 years we dated, we made like rabbits. Sex was all we ever did. Then it's been downhill ever since.

Could he have become asexual? Or is it just something you are, and always were?
